34F, yikes! Almost nailed by a school bus - apparently she didn't think red lights apply to her. Less than two years ago a guy was killed here by a school bus - how quickly folks forget. Good reminder to me that green doesn't necessarily mean go!

KCBikeCommuter 04-23-15 07:32 AM

Another cool (39F) start to the day, but a really enjoyable ride in. Light winds and a nice sunrise. My legs were a little tired since I road yesterday as well. My commute takes about 2.5 hrs round-trip, so I normally try to ride M-W-F and give my legs a break on T-Th. It's supposed to rain tomorrow, so I decided to go ahead and ride today instead.

I'm supposed to have a gravel ride on Saturday, so I spent some time last night converting the bike from 'commuter' back to 'CX' trim. Removed the fenders & rack and put on the aggressive gravel tires.

Had to get my cold weather gear back out. Some of the higher elevations around me are forecasting snow! I hope my fledgling veggie plants survive tonight in the garden.

The ride was nice. Had two very nice school buses to balance out arsprod's red-light runner. One waved me in front of her so I wouldn't get stuck behind her at an approaching stop. Another made a very nice wide pass.

Was expecting 28F, got 37 and virtually no wind. Much better than expected. I like to average around 30 min on my way in, did it in 34. For whatever reason I just didn't have the power today. It's nice that sunrise is at 6:30 so I don't have to ride in the dark anymore. Hoping the wind stays below 20 mph for the trip home.

mgw4jc 04-23-15 07:59 AM

A very comfortable 70F and a partial tail wind helped me get home a bit faster than usual yesterday.

Another nice morning today: sunny and about 55F.

Hypno Toad 04-23-15 08:13 AM

First ride to the office in 3 weeks (first time I've gone to the office in 3 weeks). Felt real nice to ride that route again and a wonderful morning - 30F and sunny. Spotted 4 white tails along the way, they are so tame around here, they get about 5 feet off the trail, stop and watch you go by.

enigmaT120 04-23-15 11:13 AM

36 degrees and dark this morning, but it was still dry and a nice ride. 3 cars passed me in 9 miles, about as good as it gets lately. It's raining now but I brought my Showers Pass for the ride home if it's cold and wet enough that I want it. Ugh, this is my first bike commute in 2 weeks.

RidingMatthew 04-23-15 12:15 PM

it was 47 this morning. i wore what i wore yesterday for 44/5 (i was cool yesterday) and was so comfortable today!

Dropped my chain inside and outside of the front crankset today. I have to figure out why it is doing that pretty nervewracking in traffic.

I hope the city will get the broken down car out of the cycletrack today before my ride home. It is kinda narrow and tricky through there.

I left later than yesterday and there seemed to be a ton more cars/ school buses. I wonder if I need to leave earlier. I wish arriving early meant i got to leave early!

High/low limit screws.

I felt lazy today and took the subway. :(

If I see I'm getting close early I'll take a little detour through a neighborhood, circle around a shopping center, or stop at a close-by Panera Bread. Just because you get there early doesn't mean you have to go in and start working. :P

how can they all of a sudden be misadjusted? i have a triple shifter on a compact could that be part of the problem?

how often do people change their cables?

essiemyra 04-24-15 05:05 AM

It was a very nice commute in again today! I took the longer route to work. The temps are still cool in the am 37f degrees this am.

tarwheel 04-24-15 06:17 AM

Chilly commute this morning with temps in the low 40s. The tailwind I had yesterday morning was gone, which hopefully will make my afternoon commute easier. Great commuting week for me, riding 140 total miles in four days.

mgw4jc 04-24-15 06:18 AM

I got some cold fingers after this morning's chilly 47F temps. But the sun is out and the sky is blue, so warmer temps are coming.

And it's FRIDAY!

esmith2039 04-24-15 06:38 AM

Had a doc. appointment yesterday so didn't ride.. amazing how much worse I felt not riding in! A bit windy from the south but the temps were almost perfect. Might be stormy on way home but I'm prepared. Joked my coworkers I may just start bringing in my swimsuit!

Could also be a stretched chain, worn chain-ring or bent teeth, or derailleurs got bumped and out of line or bent hanger.

I can sometimes drop the chain outside even with limit screws set correctly since I have it set for a slight overshift to make it shift well. I can imagine that happening with a triple shifter and double ring.

Made my third commute (ever and for the week) today. My pop gave me his old mountain bike.

My commute's a nice, short (4.1 miles) and mostly flat mix of parkway, trail, and road. It's 50 here and cloudy. It felt great.

No commute is too short, welcome! Another 34F day, but wind's finally dissipated... finally!

Things need to be adjusted every once in a while. Something may have moved the derailleur, cable stretch, chain stretch, who knows?

Ride in this morning was cold and windy. Hopefully the wind either dies down or shifts to the northeast for the ride home or I'll be facing a monster headwind.

timvan_78 04-24-15 10:55 AM

as i was getting ready it was absolutely pounding rain. By the time I got outside it was raining lightly. 5 mins later it was drizzling. Then it stopped. Nice ride...legs felt good!

RidingMatthew 04-24-15 12:58 PM

45f this morning tried something new today. regular jersey and arm warmers with a long sleeve jersey overtop plus vest. I took vest off during the ride and got cold (did not realize how much wind it was blocking) so I put it back on. Rode a different way this morning and chased a turkey down the greenway until he ducked into the woods.

tarwheel good riding this week. Next wed and thursday looks like it could be some soggy days.

Great commute today. Have been opting for the longer of two routes all week and it's always rewarding. Back roads..less traffic..a few good hills.

bmthom.gis 04-26-15 08:28 PM

Oh it has been almost 2 weeks since I commuted. Last week was a wash with the wife gone and added responsibilities, and the week before I was only home Momday and Tuesday. I did however take my Schwinn Suburban 2 whole miles to a bar last week for a few cold ones. Looking forward to tomorrow and riding in

dcb23 04-27-15 05:08 AM

Rides in and back have been nice lately, mornings are chilly but nice. 46F / 8C today. Last week I had to replace my rear tube...messiest job there is.

essiemyra 04-27-15 05:17 AM

The commute in this morning was very nice with the temp at 47f degrees, and very cloudy skies today. I took the longer route. The trash appears less on the side of the roads as the city of Haverhill had clean up day on Saturday. Which I did volunteer some time and pick up trash at a location by my work.

mgw4jc 04-27-15 06:13 AM

Chilly ride again this morning: 41F to start. There was a pretty cool section of fog on my route. It started as being about 25 feet above the road. Then a little further down the road and I couldn't see more than a quarter mile. A little further and it was gone. Mist rising from a couple of ponds was nice too.

arsprod 04-27-15 07:09 AM

Clear and cold this a.m., 35F but no wind... me like no wind

beerRun 04-27-15 08:16 AM

Clear and chilly this morning (43F)---short sleeves might have been a bad idea .

On the upside, I got to say hello to some baby geese as I passed by.
