Late January I noticed a bit of an Achilles injury; between field work early February, vacation half of March, and the injury, I didn't ride much at all from late-January to early-April. Now I'm back at 'er, and catching up on my 2014 stats :)
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=446262 Nice ride this morning but MUCH cooler at about 44 degrees. I opted for the thin tights over my bike shorts, and thin wind shell over short sleeve jersey, and long finger gloves. Brought my half finger gloves with me, so I can ride home in the normal shorts, jersey and half finger gloves. Should be 70 with a tail wind this afternoon. |
beautiful AM.

First commute of the year, way behind the curve. Also first commute to our new office. Traded in the old 30 mile r/t for a 15 mile r/t. Hopefully makes my commuting a bit more manageable.

A coworker took her first ride in today; she is planning on joining in Bike Month. She expressed shock at how easy it was. She was prepared to be sweaty and miserable, but it took her twenty minutes. Her ride home is uphill and might take five minutes longer and will be in the heat... I didn't mention that, don't want to be discouraging. Since she is working with a dress code that tends toward slacks and nice shoes, that might be her hurdle.

Just got a new saddle in today that I ordered last week, gonna try it out on the ride home. I went around the block a couple of times, making small adjustments, but I'm wearing jeans right now so that's not a very good indicator of how it will feel. I can stop and make quick adjustments on the way home if need be. |

@HydroG33r what makes a graph like that? I'm a numbers and stats junkie and would love to see that for my cycling stats.

It pulls your activity from Strava (which as a data junkie I'm sure you're already using) and calculates an overall ranking, tracks individual segments, etc. It's really cool. Used to be free, now costs a little (though you can still do a one time sync to see how it looks and see if you like it). It's now £9.99 (approx €12.77, US$15.96, AUS$18.34) a year. |
Today was 16°C and sunny. I left home at13 to reach the train station. Along the street one driver rang to methen he stopped the car and whe had a discussion. In him opinion Imust ride on the sidewalk.
In late afternoon I returned home by the train station. |
What a great ride in. New tires are like a hot knife through butter. Already averaging 2-3 MPH faster with what feels like less effort and this is with headwind and a heavier than normal load. Weather was great too sunny and 67.

Fine and mellow.

25 mph winds with gusts up to 40. I rode as carefully as possible. I think the wind gusts got my heart rate up higher than riding in snow storms this winter.

winds were crazy strong yesterday. also had buckets of rain fall on me. thank goodness for the SKS raceblade fenders. they work like a charm.
a police golf cart honked at me on the brooklyn bridge. only to speed up then make a three point turn so he could park in the pedestrian lane. he sped by me, literally "buzzed" me in the bike path (which is not open to motor vehicles btw), only to have me pass him seconds later. it was beyond silly. he was late for his post, this much was clear. also far less cyclists on the road made for a VERY sketchy commute. motorists clipping me out of the cycling lane more than once. the wind blowing me around. still better than the subway. today was far better, weather wise and traffic wise. looking forward to the commute home :). get out there! |

What the hell is going with the NYPD and the Brooklyn Bridge. I assumed by now they would have moved on. You know between them, the upcoming construction which is going to reduce the bridge to one shared pedestrian and bicycle lane as well as the tourists you'd be better offer taking the Manhattan bridge. Trust me it's a better ride. |
Judging by some of my fellow commuters (not anyone on this board, of course), I wonder how it is that so many people have no clue how to stop and start a bike. I see riders coasting up to intersections, and then staying in the saddle, trying to balance on tippy toes during the red. When the light turns green, they shuffle-shuffle en pointe (can't be good for the shoes), and try to put both feet on the pedals at the same time. A couple riders wobbled so much I was concerned they'd fall into traffic.

Super-windy today. Or is it just that every spring is super-windy, and I've been oblivious to it until this year?

Cool 45F this morning, but sunny and clear. I did wear a long sleeve shirt for an extra layer. Nuttin' too exciting to report other than a nice ride in.

Cold this morning! 38 degrees by the bank. My ears actually got cold for the first time, putting that on my list for winter. The wind felt like it was out of NE but that's okay on the ride in not as many hills. |

Yesterday was insane I had to go up to the Bronx so I needed to take the subway. Can't say I missed riding in the rain. However yeah bike is still better than the subway.

Trust me it's a better ride. the construction has already reduced the bridge to one lane at the lookout points. there's no where to look out, only travel thru. i take the Brooklyn in the morning b/c it's relatively empty, and the Manhattan in the afternoon. using the Manhattan adds about .8 mile to my route. it's fine, but in the morning, i just need to get to work. the entrance to Manhattan from Jay St is sketchy. no protected lanes and cars drive into it. i hate Jay St these days. when are they going to make Adams St/Boreum Pl something with bike lanes? there are already 4 car lanes it's a little ridiculous they don't have a bike lane there and squash bikes into the crazy drivers onto Jay St. they really should make Jay St a pedestrian plaza and do away with travel thru there. there are just too many people on foot. |

Chilly morning for this time of year in NC, with temps in the upper 40s. Sunny skies and should be a beautiful day with afternoon temps in the 70s.
I took the long way home Tuesday along the greenways, for a 31-mile afternoon commute and 46 miles round trip on the day. It was a great day for a long commute with sunny skies and temps about 70 F. The leaves are mostly out now and dogwoods and other trees and shrubs still flowering. As soon as the days get a little longer and warmer, I might tackle my first metric commute by taking the greenways in the morning and afternoon. |

Wondering that myself.. although I started last year around May this year was March. Still don't remember the strong winds last year.

colder than expected
I my first full commute of the year, I was under dressed, it was colder than I expected, and the 31 miles felt like 50, plus I had to stop twice to go indoors and warm up. At least it should be warmer on the way home.

It was a perfect overcast morning. There's a large construction project on my regular route that's forced me to come up with an alternate route for a few months; although it adds a half mile in each direction, it takes me past some strawberry fields that smell mighty delicious, especially in the afternoon. I was also stoked to find another license plate to add to my collection this morning.

Windy again this morning. While it helps at certain times, I can't enjoy it too much because of the gusts and cross-winds. I end up leaning a lot and doing mini-swerves to stay balanced.
|
It was pretty chilly this morning 45F. The camera guy from work had me recreate some stuff for pictures so I was cold until I got moving. I am glad I switched out my gloves and put on my hat with ear covers before I rode in for real.
the cool thing is the sun was out and it was a bright clear day. Looking forward to my 70F ride home too! Wife even cleared me :love:for some extra miles! |
I've got to go an extra 25 miles r/t to corporate tonight, so I drove. I feel so guilty. :(
|
I rode to work and back yesterday. It was uneventful, except that I had a tailwind in the morning and a headwind in the evening, which is slightly unusual. Actually, they were both cross breezes, but it was slightly tailish in the morning and headish in the evening. Anyway, the good news is that I'm getting accustomed to the route enough that it doesn't seem interminable any more. It's 13 miles each way. The northern half (the end near work) is pretty lonely, as the route is lightly traveled there.
It was raining lightly when I started out, but it stopped very soon afterward. I passed the heliport on 30th St, and a helicopter was landing. The wind it created blew a lot of water onto those of us on the path. It was funny and not annoying. The fuel smell the helicopters make is not pleasant, though. The heliport is immediately adjacent to the path. The next thing over is the Hudson River. |
Working on the frankenbike tonight, hoping to get it ready for bike month and the Scott Road ride May 3. I installed the Vuelta HD rims and the Exage 500LX RD and crankset. I'm sort of unhappy with the latter two. The RD may have a bent bolt, and the crankset definitely has a bent outer ring. And it's all coming up pretty heavy. My parts-bin approach to cost savings is not paying off. Still, it will be much lighter than the Super Sport or the MTB-tug.
|
I had a very good ride in this morning. It is my first all week, but it was nice. I went a little longer route than I have been riding since it is getting light so much earlier.
|
Great ride this morning, fastest commute in quite a while. A tailwind much of the way helped, and I also rode my fastest commuter bike. It's had a flat for several days and I finally got around to fixing it last night.
Looks like commuting is going to be my primary cycling this week. I was supposed to be riding a 3-day tour in the mountains this weekend but our continually sucky weather looks to be halting those plans. Some friends and I have planned this trip with our wives for months, but it's supposed to be cold and rainy all weekend. We can't get a break with the weather around here lately. We're lucky to get two days of sunshine before it starts raining again. The last time we planned a weekend cycling trip, the same thing happened. Very frustrating. |
