I hadn't planned to ride today, but after the weather forecast stated this would be the nicest day of the week, I reconsidered. It's supposed to be in the mid-80's with much lower humidity for today and today only. It was indeed a very nice ride to work!

Another 100-degree forecasted here. More troublesome is the humidity inching up with the dewpoint in the 70s again. Yesterday I got stuck in a meeting much of the afternoon with no water, and then had to walk a couple of miles in the heat before heading home. I was extremely thirsty when I got home and pumped myself with fluids all night. For dinner I had cole slaw, a bunch of water melon and banana pudding.

About 95 for the ride home and about 76 for the ride in this morning. Just a hot June so far. The weekend looks like it may have a little relief, highs in the mid 80s instead of upper 90s and some decent chances for rain.
A house in a neighborhood I ride through has had a basketball goal sitting at the curb. It looks to be intact. If it is still there when I ride by tonight, I will get back out with the car and pick it up perhaps. |
We've set a record in Raleigh for the most consecutive days at 95 F or higher at 11, beating the old record of 9, and could easily extend the streak to 14 days give the current forecast. The crazy part is that it's just June, and July-August are usually our hottest months. I've ridden on 8 of those days, 6 of them commuting. Although I hate hot, humid weather, I have acclimated to the heat by continuing to ride almost every day. Yesterday the official high temperature was 98, and the heat index reached 107. I didn't head home from work until nearly 7 pm, so I avoided riding during the worst of it, but I walked about 3 miles during the hottest part of the day.

Wow, 78F yesterday morning and 63F today. A most welcomed cold front since my house a/c quit Monday!
|
I think I gained 5 pounds of water weight on the ride home last night. In hindsight, I should have just waited it out at the office. Some of the lightning was getting close!
|
Beautiful morning. I ditched my panniers for the ride in and really stepped on the pedals. Made it in 8:42.

Yeah, same here. I hit a storm last week that scared the hell out of me. So, ever since, ongoing T-storms kept me off the bike for the past 5 days. Finally had a clear break with no threats anywhere in sight this morning. This made for a nice ride. |
Slightly cooler this morning than was Monday morning, which was nice. Didn't sweat quite as much. Made it to work about 1.5 minutes faster also. Nothing else to report I guess.
I'm definitely noticing that I sweat FAR more in the mornings when it's 70's and 80%+ humid, vs. in the afternoon in the 90's with 50% humidity. Monday coming home the heat index was 105°F  |
I don't envy the heat some of you guys are experiencing! In these parts, it's conceivable to go all year without hitting 30C/86F, which is just fine with me, though we have a forecast of low-30's within the next few days. Summers here are great; winters...not so much.
Nice commute, perfect weather this morning. Trailed another commuter on a road bike for a bit and passed him after he got caught at a light. I could hear him drafting me for a while down a trail, then when we hit a hill, he passed me back, and I could tell he was up for a race. I gave chase, but he was too fast up the hill for me. He was gracious enough to wait at the top and give me kudos for the effort, then we parted ways. |
Traffic jam! Came up to an intersection, 5 bikes trying to go forward through the green light, minivan trying to push through them to turn right, nobody going anywhere, so I went around the minivan on its left and way ahead of the lead biker.

Today's ride was filling. Yes, filling.
It's Denver Bike To Work Day, and my favorite LBS, which not coincidentally is near my office, had tents set up and were serving pancakes and sausage. Yum! And I bought something while I was there, too. That seemed appropriate to do. It was fun to sit there and talk with other cyclists for a little while, see what everyone else rides, etc. It was a fun diversion from the usual commute. |
I've encountered more salmon in the last week than I have all year. I said some bad words at one yesterday.
|
My daughter was bummed when we passed a road kill kitty on our commute to her summer camp this morning.
She did say it made the skeletons look better at the museum I dragged her through last week . |
hot hot and more hot. Yuck. It was 97/106 heat index shortly before I left the office.
|
Such a beautiful afternoon I decided to extend my commute home. A skunk ran out of trees into my front wheel and sprayed my legs in the process. I've spent the whole evening trying to get the smell off my legs, bike and shoes.
|
After two days of not riding due to my bike being in the shop, today's ride was very nice. The temp was 59f degrees with no humidity and partly cloudy skies.
My bike issues are not over yet though. My son bought me a new odometer for Mother's day. When the bike shop tried to install it, they told me it was not working. So I have to return it and have a new one sent to me. And my old odometer was not working consistently due to a loose wire. No use putting that one back on. So I am without an odometer which is not the end of the world. I do not tracking miles just were I am along my route and also I like to have the time. |

Ride home yesterday was hot. These hot afternoon rides start off really bad and difficult to get a good deep breath. But then once I get away from the traffic and rolling at a decent speed it gets better. Less humid for the ride in this morning: 76F and 72%. I woke up feeling a bit queasy at the stomach. A few bathroom visits and some rest helped. I took it slow coming in and felt okay, but still being careful with what and how much I eat. |
Drat--rode right into a downpour. Ended up totally soaked. I should have taken the bike with fenders this morning.
|
A big thunderstorm blew up just about the time I leave for work every morning. It wasn't storming at my house, but I would have been riding right into it. So, I drove today, which was probably a good thing because my legs also needed a break.
|
Another strong headwind for the ride in this morning. Still... the breeze helped keep me little cooler with the high humidity.

Somewhere in this mess is me. Anyone have a bell that works in the rain?!

This week I'm really missing commuting by bike. My kids are in camp a mile or so from work, so I have to drive. At least I get to ride a Divvy bike from camp to work. It's a big change from the 200+ miles last week.

My understanding is you sweat about the same for both, but when it is humid, it cannot evaporate from your skin as much, so you stay wetter. When the humidity is down, the sweat evaporates. I also think the sweat evaporates more easily when you're moving. I sweat more (i.e., get wetter) after I stop.
Yesterday's commute home was mostly cloudy and there were scattered pop-up showers all around me. I praying, hoping for some cool rain on me. I was actually riding and yelling at the clouds, taunting them. "Come on rain, what'chu got?? Is that all you got??" But 15.5 miles and not a single drop on me. Darn. I seemed to have threaded the needle right between the showers between work and home. |
First multi-modal commute. Drove 30 miles, parked at a MUP trail head and rode the last 15 miles into work. Humidity lowered a bit, a little breezy but not unbearable.
Good news is I have a job interview 2/3 on Sunday morning (what kind of HR rep schedules interviews on Sundays? Geez), if all goes well I could be back to commuting daily as it's only 10 miles [one way] from home. |

This morning on my way to work I saw a city pickup with a horizontal bar suspended in front of it. Hanging from the bar were 5 or 6 weights or something. They hung down within 2-3 in of the ground. It was approaching a "trigger" light from the opposite side as I was.
He was going so slow it seemed like he was waiting for me to trigger the light from my side. Which I did. The trigger starts the timer for the crosswalk on the main street. It always starts at 7, when it reaches 0, the main streets light turns yellow then red. And my light turns green. What was weird is when the countdown reached 2 the main street turned red and mine turned green. I didn't hang around but wondered if the weird pickup had something to do with the light's behavior. |
It was a good commute this morning. I started out last night prepared to ride but not completely confident I would due to the rain predicted for this morning. When I woke up this morning the weather forecaster had the showers just a few miles from my area. So I decided not to ride, but continued to get ready for work. I sat down on the chair for just a few minutes and jumped out and said I have to ride. If it starts downpouring if i am not half way there I will turn back. I never downpoured just barely spit my whole way to work. A very good ride in!!

No ride today.. quite the storms in the KC area last night. Alot of down limbs. Did a double donation of blood yesterday and still rode home in the 100+ heat index so I think I deserve a break today.
|
Fast commute this morning due to fresh legs from taking the day off riding yesterday because of morning thunderstorms. The air felt more humid today than it has all summer, and that's saying something. I was totally drenched with sweat when I got to work, and I doubt that my clothes will dry by the time I leave work because I'm planning to take the afternoon off. Part of my rationale for leaving early today is that I have a strong premonition that we will get hit by thunderstorms this afternoon. When it gets this hot and humid around here, thunderstorms are almost a given.
