In my experience, most bike shops and many on-line sources tend to focus on 23 mm tires, with 25s becoming more widespread in recent years. However, options for 28-32 mm tires -- particularly folding, light weight versions -- are limited. I generally order wider tires on-line for that reason.

Schools are about to reopen for fall semester here, and I am dreading the increase in traffic. The dual threat of school buses and teenage drivers makes for a more "exciting" commute on my route, which passes several schools and bus routes. Fortunately, the city has added a bike lane on the primary road where I encounter school traffic, but many bus drivers continue to pass me as closely as possible, sometimes even crossing into the bike lane.

Rode the road bike (in reference to previous posts... 23mm tires) in today. I felt faster even though the bike computer said it was a little above average speed for the ride. I think the bike did pretty good on the commute definitely lighter and quicker to accelerate. I did not like having my camelbak bag on my back. It was kinda nice to not be carrying panniers but I felt like I was forgetting something. Supposed to be a hot ride home yuck.

Weird commutes for me this week. My kid is in camp two miles from the office along the lakefront trail. We are driving to the office, then she's riding her bike to camp and I'm on a Divvy bike share bike. I'm riding hers back to the office. When I pick her up, it's reversed. It's a great ride, but she rides the smallest frame available with full sized wheels. I bet people get a good laugh when I'm riding her bike. She's 5', I'm 5'10, so her bike is a little small for me.

it's been a good commute these past couple weeks. i have had some falls though.

one was due to me pulling into a squished right sharrow lane and trying to make a left (cars were stopped) but then they started moving and making rights into me. i had to balance to keep from getting run over but i landed on the trunk of a car squeezing me and then i hit the pavement. it was jay st (smith st) and schermerhorn

the second was due to me cycling then my shoe lace unraveling and it wrapping around my pedals. this is maybe the 10th time that's happened but i was able to pull over to the sidewalk and undo it in the past. this time, i fell b/c i leaned in a weird way and was going way too slow while i pulled over, causing some balance issues and then the fall. when i got home, i cut those laces since they've been nothing but trouble since i got the shoes (chrome kursks). the cycling shoes are great. but the shoelaces are much too long and get caught on the cranks as well as the inside of the pedals.

i got scuffed up on my legs and knees but nothing terrible.

i'm going to a bike handling class this week. i haven't had any self-inflicted falls up til now. i'm thinking it's due to the heat i'm making bad judgment calls. i don't know.

i made some fun bunny hops over gravel and a middle road divider which was fun. some crazy motorists out there passing way too close, but for the most part, no issues. mostly the commutes have been fine, just a lot more trafficked than usual in some spots and empty in others.

i went to a bike fit clinic last week and changed out my saddle. i'm glad i found the saddle i was looking for. women's road riva. it's so much better.

I know that feeling! My wife is right about 5' and has a road bike with a 43 cm frame. It feels very weird if I make some adjustments and take it around the block.

Today started off with me having to walk my bike to through my yard to the neighbors driveway and still having to step in a foot of water, but after that I got to see the sun (which has only been seen one other day in the last 21 days), then I got attacked by a dog who bit my shorts and luckily did not break my skin (had dog slobber on my leg though and luckily did not knock me off) but I have teeth marks in my shorts, then I almost got hit by a car, peds walking into the bike lane without looking the usual, but somehow out of all these adventures today I still arrived to work with a smile on my face and am looking forward to my ride home.

I know the more I commute the more likely it is to experience issues. Today's ride was a one way 15 mile jaunt to work filled with 3 cars attempting to murder me and one pickup truck that passed me and then slowed down to gun his engine spewing diesel exhaust all up in my face. You know it you have probably seen it before the huge black cloud they pickup makes when he steps on the gas?

Had a few weeks of mid 60's with warm humidity for my morning rides. Yesterday the temps have fallen to the low 50's so the long sleeve shirt is back out. The ride home I switched to the short sleeve for the warmer temps. Was nice enough I took a 3 mile detour of city trail, black top and then finished with gravel back to my regular route. This morning it was low 50's with fog. Very cold on the hands. Fall weather is coming fast. Seeing plenty of does with fawns and the occasional coyote to keep the ride interesting.

RidingMatthew 08-05-15 07:04 AM

Be careful and I hope the next 4-7 rides are uneventful.. you have had enough in one morning to last you for a while.

great ride in this morning I squeezed 15.35 miles in a 10-11 mile commute. I averaged 17.4 and rode with a buddy for some of it this morning. It sure made things a little more fun to ride in with someone.

tarwheel 08-05-15 07:31 AM

Extremely humid and warm this morning. I was so wet when I arrived a work that I couldn't remove the headlight from my bike because my hands were too sweaty to grip the strap. The high temperature is supposed to reach the upper 90s this afternoon, so the heat index should be above 100. Not looking forward to the afternoon commute.

KCBikeCommuter 08-05-15 08:10 AM

Steady rain all the way home last night. It rained again early this morning, but stopped before I started my commute. The roads were still very wet, but at least it wasn't raining on me.

Shiloh253 08-05-15 08:22 AM

Got my first ride in today after almost a week and a half off the bike (needed some more tubes, local shop didn't have the right size so I had to order them, USPS screwed over my shipping, blah blah). Just did an easy 6 miles. Weather was cloudy with some obvious rain showers coming our way later, but I stayed dry and cool the whole ride.

baron von trail 08-05-15 09:02 AM

Another perfect ride. I believe it was 59°F, with maybe 50% humidity when I rode in between 7 and 8 this morning. No wind, dry conditions, sun coming up in the sky, what's not to like?

arsprod 08-05-15 09:23 AM

Perfect weather for commuting and I had to drive because of appointments... argh, killed another 4 week, ride every day streak

snow_echo_NY 08-05-15 09:57 AM

i bike commuted to my appointments a week ago arsprod - is that possible for you?

Yeah and I usually do. This was annual physical and I had to fast - too far to ride with no food!

Magz 08-05-15 10:28 AM

Hot! but riding

I haven't rode the commute since spring. This week I decided to ignore the heat and try bimodal bike/train commute. Monday 11.5 miles round trip on the bike, Tuesday 9.5 miles roundtrip. Still adjusting to the heat, it's been 108-110 in the afternoon, nearly unbearable if you aren't acclimated and are out of shape. Today I drove, tomorrow I need to drive. Plan to bike again on Friday and continue after that. Writing this to make it happen. :) Really looking forward to cooler temps...November? arizona desert - beautiful but deadly.

Second day riding the fixed gear to work... It seems I may like this more than I expected!

ah yeah, you need food hah

Very pleasant ride in this morning after returning from a two-day business trip. I'd like to ride tomorrow, but the forecast is for afternoon thunderstorms. Should I risk it?

I was thinking also about trying the fixed gear with my backpack, since I don't have to lug either the computer or a lunch. I've rarely tackled the kinds of hills that surround my house on the fixed gear in the past. It'd be a substantial test of mettle...

essiemyra 08-06-15 05:07 AM

My first day back after a long weekend of bicycle touring. It was a very nice commute to work today, and I found a wallet that needs to be returned to its owner. I notice every day the sun is coming up just a bit later.

mgw4jc 08-06-15 07:29 AM

I had the day off yesterday to celebrate my daughter's birthday. She turned 10 and we all went to a water park. A pretty good day with the family.

Back on this morning with a couple of extra miles for 14 total. Not as humid this week as last week, which has been nice.

arsprod 08-06-15 08:36 AM

Beautiful yesterday and I couldn't ride - rainy and yucky today... figures. Finding the bright spot - I bought some new, more compact shoe covers for upcoming trip and discovered they totally suck. I'd rather have wet shoes that I can dry at work than in the middle of the wilderness where they're my only shoes

PatrickGSR94 08-06-15 09:21 AM

Cooler this morning but ughh headwind made it super slow at 1h 24m total elapsed to go 15.5 miles. :(

KCBikeCommuter 08-06-15 09:55 AM

Nice temperature (68F) this morning, but fairly humid. Stopped by the Scout statue on my way in.

@KCBikeCommuter that is a great picture and cool statue.. thanks for sharing. WHat kind of bike is that?

I rode some extra miles this morning since it is supposed to rain tonight. I will probably be getting wet. I am riding my non fendered bike and not looking forward to it.
Hopefully DHL will deliver tires tonight!

I also surpassed my goal for this year 2712 miles as of this mornings ride. Last year I rode 2700 total.

KCBikeCommuter 08-06-15 11:20 AM

Thanks RidingMatthew! The bike is a Trek Crossrip LTD.

jfowler85 08-06-15 12:17 PM

Just switched to Northwave Jet 365s and a set of PD A600s last night, made the hills a little bit less laborious and more enjoyable this morning.

Changing the fork as well if I can ever get one of my LBSs to sell me a 1-1/8 star nut. One says "oh we don't stock those" and the other sold me a 1". And this is why I buy online...

txcrash 08-06-15 12:50 PM

It's hot as hell this week, so commutes are short and there's been a stiff headwind both ways on home side and a stiff headwind going to work, but that means a stiff tailwind going home.

Next week's mileage will drop due to some evening commitments that'll require driving m-w, but I'll still try to get some leg spinning time in, somehow, someway.
