Ride home I was trained again for about ten minutes. Train is done, I wait for a few semi's to cross and then the rain hit. Started pouring and just to spice things up, pea sized hail is mixed in. One big cloud, took me a few miles to get past it. Pretty much dried out by the time I made it home, except the shoes which are probably still wet. |

Last year I was shooting to hit 100 consecutive days when we had a blizzard on day 94. I still attempted to ride, but the snow was so deep (not yet plowed) that it took me nearly an hour to go 2.5 miles. I had left the house early that morning anticipating the weather, but it slowed me down more than I expected. I could have slogged on the remaining 6.5 miles, but I realized at my current pace it would have been 10 AM before I made it to work. I didn't feel like trying to explain to my boss why I showed up at a client's office 2 hours late, so with my tail between my legs I rode back home and drove my truck. I wasn't happy to get that close to my goal and get thwarted. This year I started my commute streak a couple months earlier. I'm not expecting a blizzard in early September, so barring something unusual I should be able to easily hit 100+ consecutive days. :) |
I don't know if it was the cool temps (60F) but I was on it this morning - fast for me. At least it felt that way until I saw I only got to the office about 4 minutes earlier than usual... sigh

96 and counting?
Wednesday is the day I hit magic 100. Then I'll just see how long I can keep the streak going. So far this year I've only driven to work 23 times, and most of that was back in February during the most brutal part of the winter.

A really strange thing that I've noticed about that: when you're counting down, the commutes somehow get harder and the pressure builds up. Even though the previous 95 days were just care-free rides that you thought nothing of, the last 5 the pressure and uncertainty builds. The only way out is just ride and don't think about it.
My wife's work schedule isn't very flexible to allow her to pick him up and take him over to the high school, so I said I would take care of it. However, I didn't want to drive to work and wreck my streak. So early this morning I put his golf clubs and my bike in my truck, then drove to his school. I parked my truck, then rode my bike to work (7 miles). I got to work early so I could take a little extra time this afternoon and still maintain my billable hours. My son rode the bus to school at his normal time. Around 12:45 I will ride back to his school (7 more miles), put my bike back in the truck and take him and his clubs to the high school. After dropping him off, I'll drive to my house and park my truck, then ride my bike back to work (8 miles.) I'll finish my work day and then ride home (8 more miles) for a total of about 30 miles. I explained my plan to my wife. She said, "Why don't you just drive today? It would make things a lot easier for you." On day 96? Are you kidding me? I'll ride through a tornado if I have to. |
nice ride this AM. I hate riding directly into a sunrise because I don't know if cars behind me can see me at all.
Weather is perfect for riding though! |
My wife does a similar thing. My goal was 1,000 miles and I was pedaling down the road at mile 999 and she pulled up in her car and asked if I wanted a ride... Seriously? WTH? She's done it before and I've told her if I am pedaling down the road I will never, ever quit and want a ride.

Once again I expected rain on me going home yesterday, and got nothing.
We had plenty of rain during the afternoon yesterday while I was at work. And I correctly decided to put the fenders on the bike the night before. It was plenty wet when I left the office, and there was water dripping from trees everywhere (pseudo rain haha), but it never did actually rain on me during the commute home. I even put my phone in a bag and went sans socks in anticipation of getting soaked, but it never happened. I was glad to have the fenders, though, with all the water on the ground. So far this year I still have yet to do an actual commute in a real rain shower. |
Hustled home in order to have a chance to ride with my daughter over to her soccer practice. Nope, got the polite brush-off. She was planning to meet her teammate a few blocks away and they would ride together. See you later, Dad!

It's been pouring for the last 6-7 hours. Luckily, the radar shows a nice break in the rain that should be over me right around the time I leave work. :)

Guys, on my ride to work this morning, I spotted what I believe to be a the cycling equivalent of a unicorn where I live. I came upon ~40ish man wearing jeans, t-shirt and regular shoes, riding an old (but in good working order) completely stock 60s/70's black Peugot to work. No helmet and no pretentiousness. He was the embodiment of what cycling needs to strive for.

A nice cool commute this morning. It was certainly more relaxing than the right angle turn I made last night while getting a drink of water and discovered a skunk between me and the hedge a few short feet away. Fortunately I wasn't that scary to him and didn't get sprayed.
|
I needed my car at work yesterday, so wasn't able to bike commute, and I'm glad I didn't. Despite the forecast for 20% chance of rain, we had thunderstorms that started during my usual commute time and continued for hours. I have been pretty lucky so far this week, as it has rained almost every day but I haven't gotten caught in it yet. However, I still have to get home this afternoon, so I have my fingers crossed.
Leaving on a week-long vacation tomorrow morning, so today is my last commute for a while. Hopefully our late summer hot spell will have passed by the time I return. The weather has been miserably hot and humid here the past two weeks. |

My wife texted me just before 5 yesterday asking if I had looked at the radar. I had not since around lunch. I was already outside when I got the text and just looked up to the sky. "Hmm, dark clouds." I looked in the direction I was heading: blue sky. But the clouds were heading that way. My wife called and offered to rescue me. I said I can ride even if it rains.
I had a tail wind to start as I was heading in the same direction as the storm (east), but just ahead of it. Then I turned north. The cross-wind slowed me down, and some rain drops started. Then a deluge started. I was still about 5 miles from home. Visibility was my main concern - both of seeing and being seen. I turned into a driveway of a house that is surrounded by tall, mature trees. I was somewhat protected, but then saw a free-standing carport and decided to wait it out there. It came down hard for about 15 minutes. I texted my wife telling her where I was. Then, I took a selfie. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=476541 If you like bike commuting And getting caught in the rain... Here is what passed over me. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=476542 It let up and I rode on home. It stopped before I was home. Humid and warm but nice ride in this morning. I believe there is a cool down happening this weekend. |
We picked up about 4.5 inches of rain overnight, but the roads were nearly dry by the time I rode in this morning. Nice tail wind too! :thumb:

ughhhh hating myself right now. I brought my utility bike to work on the car yesterday with intent to ride it home (to try it out on a commute), then ride back this morning. But I forgot my bike shoes (15 mile hilly commute would suck with my office shoes), and then this morning I couldn't get out of bed early enough.
So I have ended the week with one commute only on Wednesday. Sucks, I'm doing way worse than I was this time last year. :( *edit* okay well I'm about 350 miles above my commuting total compared to this time last year, and a couple hundred above my annual total miles. But still, this time last year I went 2 or 3 months without missing a single commute. |

Four minutes faster is actually pretty significant, unless your commute is like 2 hours long or something.

Radar said it had stopped raining. It hadn't. ;)
Arrived home a few pounds heavier, but with a nice clean bike. Beautiful weather this morning. No humidity and mid 60s. Even a right-hook by a school bus couldn't break my smile. |
My plan today was to work from home and go for a 45-minute ride prior, but I checked my email and found a note from the boss implying that I should be at the office today. Fine with me, still get a bike ride in!
After rounding a slow corner, I suddenly heard the dreaded "pfffffffffffffffff" sound. That's the first time I've ever had a flat on the way into work. Plenty on the way home, but first for on the way in. Lost about 15 minutes. Whatev. It's a beautiful day in Edmonton, wish I could ride all day. |
awesome. Cool in the AM just at dawn but I overdressed and was soon hot.
complemented some dude on his AC/DC cycling jersey. Almost finished my garage/bike/storage solution last night: 6 velo-hinges for the bikes, pulley hoist for the tandem, kids bikes against the wall. |
54F / 12C coolest ride in for a long time. Broke out the zip up top.

It was an exceptionally nice ride in this morning. The road that they tore up last week has a new coat of asphalt on it. I do not think it is finished yet but it was so smooth. I love smooth roads. It is way better than the patchwork it was before they tore it up. In my town they are starting on a road this week they say will take till June of 2016 to finish and they are doing a small bridge that goes over a culvert and about 1200ft of road. I know this because I spoke with the engineer from our town. He said they are rebuilding the road not just resurfacing. what I big time difference from one project to the other. Well anyway the bridge road is completed there will be very little patchwork road that I will be riding. Lucky me!!

Gorgeous ride this morning. I rode the fixed gear and felt surprisingly strong. Maybe the cool temps helped? 52*F, so I wore a windbreaking outer layer. It was toasty, perhaps too warm. It'll take some adjusting again as Fall arrives.
|
I swear I saw my phone say 60F when I woke up. Either it was not up to date or the temp dropped big time. It is now 48F here at 8a.m. I put on a jacket before leaving, but didn't wear gloves. That meant cold hands all the way to work. The sun is broken!

First commute in almost 10 days. Was in Kentucky all of last week for work. It felt great! Temps were in the mid 50s...had to do a little searching for arm and knee warmers. Traffic was miserable on the main road after I leave my subdivision. Went right instead of the usual left and wound my way around a back way. Still got stymied at a 4 way stop. This minivan lady completely cut in front of me...o was slow pedaling so as not to have to unclup. In the middle of the lane when she went around. Gave her the "what are you doing" gesture, as it obviously didn't save her anytime. Anyway, got to a point where I had enough space to cut up the right side and made the turn before her. Mild satisfaction.
High of only 82, so I suspect real Temps will be around 85 this afternoon. It's good to be back! |
