BB cable guide squeaking

I've never heard anyone else ever mention this but my cable guide/cable interface squeaks when I shift because it gets dry from the dirt. My other bike did this and I just thought it was a bad design or something but now my new bike is doing it too. Anyone ever dealt with this?

I did. Solved by converting to full length housing for the RD. The FD doesn't have enough cable travel for the issue to manifest itself.

What did your cable guide look like then? I don't see how I could run full length housing on mine..

I think it's a pretty standard plastic guide. I had to drill it out a bit to accomodate for the wider cable housing and drill a hole laterally to attach it wih a zip tie.

Here are some pics:

before:

After drilling, but before putting it back on the bike.

I didn't happen to take close up photos of how it looks on the bike once installed. I also had to drill out the cable stops and I cut off one end off two plastic ferrules to run the cable housing through them so that it would fit snugly inside the old cable stops which are now cable guides.

Hope it helps. Do you have a similar looking guide or something quite different?

It's an interesting story but it's pretty similar to yours.

I've had the same issue on multiple bikes and also eventually went to full housing. Jagwire makes a kit that uses cable liners for the bits that don't normally have cable housing on them, so you don't need to drill out cable stops or BB guides or anything. Been using it for a couple months and I'm satisfied.

Nice! I didn't know about this. SO does the liner extend from the shifter all the way to the derailleur? How does the extra width fit in the housing? What keeps the liner from shifting around, slipping, or bunching up?

It's normal cable housing from the shifter to the cable stop, then the liner has a little flange on the end so you thread it through the cable housing and it doesn't get pulled all the way out. The kit has special ferrules and such too. Then basically the liner runs from the cable stop to the derailleur.

Haven't really thought about what keeps it in place but I'd guess tension, mostly. I haven't had any problems since I installed it, including a 125-mile gravel race that had very sandy conditions (Open Range Gravel Race) and the 100+ mile Maisie's Pride.

I didn't bother with the brake housing and liners, I'm sure they're fine but keeping the brake cables clean is far less urgent of an issue for me.

Thanks for the info! I need to pick up a set of these. My other bike got so bad that the tension from the bb guide / cable interface let me get into the bottom three cogs.

Yeah it's irritating. Even after just a couple rides under normal/optimal conditions there would be enough dust on my BB that it squeaked like an old house every time I shifted. Irritating on normal rides, downright rage-inducing on all-day events.

It's weird though, I feel like I have never heard anyone else's bike squeak like that when I'm out riding with them. Maybe it's just too quiet to be heard by others? Sure doesn't seem like it.

Well I'll be damned... Wish I had learned about it BEFORE I drilled out the cable stops. On the other hand it might be hard to source or be super expensive down where I am. I kinda like the ghetto solutions...

You can hear the bottom of your BB cable guide squeaking as you ride in traffic?

Would I be asking for suggestions if I couldn't?

I've used this liner combined with the shimano necked ferrules that come in their newer kits to run full length within the cannondale BB cable guides

And I thought Jamis was weird for running full shift housing from end to end along the underside of the top tube... joke's on me.
