140mm disc "rear only"?

Hey, so I am shopping around for disc brakes for my incipient cross build, and I notice that all the 160mm rotor/caliper sets seem to say "front OR rear," while the 140mm rotor/caliper say "rear only."

I know that the 140mm rotors are supposed to have somewhat less stopping power (more modulation?) than the 160. What is to stop me from buying two 140mm "rear only" calipers and putting them on front and rear? Is there any reason it won't work, other than that you are not supposed to?

Thanks!

(oh, and nevermind the race legality of the disc brakes. i just want to play in the mud.)

I don't see why it wouldn't work (not an Avid brake engineer either), but I don't see why you'd want to. The 20g in weight savings doesn't seem like it would be worth it.

They have less stopping power (smaller size) and no more modulation (same calipers/levers).

why wouldn't it work? you'd need an adapter for the reduced diameter of the 140mm rotor. if this is for weight savings, look to alligator rotors. they save 40 grams each.

Wouldn't an adapter negate any loss of weight?
