Can't say enough good things about those Schwalbe Smart Sams in 40mm. They'll handle anything I have the guts to try on a rigid steel frame.

Nice job. What fender is that?

It's a really nice trend. Take your "general purpose" cyclocross bike, stop pretending that it's a CX race bike, give it capacity for even wider tires and maybe relax the geometry a bit. That's definitely a win for the people buying these bikes.

Great looking Multitrack!! I love the older style with the level top-tube.

Now I'm scheming the idea of swapping all of my new components over to my 730, including drop bars, and setting up my more sporty Handsome Devil as a single-speed.

Trek Ion CX Pro frame, with Shimano 105-based 1x10 gearing (38 up front, 11-28 in the back) and a Paul chain keeper. Running tubeless 32mm Vittoria knobbies on (last year's) Ultegra wheels. Brakes are TRP CX8.4 Mini-Vs (which are insaaaaaane).

What a wicked bike. I've been rolling through post-typhoon debris this past week or so like it's nothing.

Still to do:
- PLAY WITH THE FIT SOME MORE (almost there!)
- Bontrager seatpost -> Thompson Elite setback
- Concor Light -> ??? saddle (something a little wider, robust, not too expensive)
- Bontrager bars -> FSA Omegas
- Retroshift lever(s), possibly
- Shimano SPDs -> Eggbeaters or Looks
- Maybe change to 36 up front or 30 max out back, for insanely steep climbs, of which there are many here

It's a Zefal Trail. I altered the mounting a touch by using zip ties at the seatstay bridge which places the fender further back while maximizing tire clearance. It's kinda floppy and doesn't provide extensive coverage, but it prevents skunk stripe and keeps your underseat bag and a stuff sack on the rear rack dry. Doesn't help the guy behind you much (read at all). If you're looking for a real fender, there are better options.

Thanks. It may be nostalgia, but I too like the classic lines of bikes from that era. I've ridden a Long Haul Trucker and didn't find it any more comfortable than my 20-year old 700. I checked the specs and the LHT is actually only about a half pound lighter than the 700 and I'm guessing about the same weight as a 730 (which as you know has the cro-mo stays and fork as well as the 700's main triangle).

Stopped by the house on the test ride to introduce the Duc to her soon-to-be new stablemate.

Won't take delivery until after my wife and I get back from vacation in a couple of weeks, but put a deposit down on a '13 Bianchi Zurigo. It'll be my first pedal bike of any kind, but narrowed it down to a cross bike as a way to get into offseason endurance & leg training for my sportbike track/race hobby. A cross bike will give me a few options for riding/training. Also gear shopping before taking delivery so I have the proper riding attire for the cooler season....before the snow falls.

Fresh from having the steerer cut, I took it from the LBS straight to Alpenrose Dairy to race it...my new 2013 Kona Jake the Snake singlespeed.

Nice! what do you use to get the chain tension right?

Andy_K 09-26-13 08:55 AM

The frame has a PF30 BB shell, and I'm using a Problem Solvers E46 eccentric bottom bracket.

I've three bikes that can serve as gravel grinders with the appropriate tires -- Ritchey Breakaway Cross, Bob Jackson World Tour and Waterford RST-22.

Just finished building this bike tonight - thought I'd post a photo before it gets dirty and never looks the same again.

^ Love the look of the Ritchey bike.

Just finished building my cross / gravel grinder bike tonight. I say both because I'm not sure yet which it will be better suited to. We don't have a lot of gravel roads / paths around these parts ... unless poor asphalt with no shoulders qualifies.

Not sure how I missed this thread before. Gravel-grinding is a fun way to challenge your bike-handling skills and explore the roads less taken. Thankfully, we have lots of gravel here in the Midwest. :thumb:

You'll have to forgive the unfortunate facial expressions. I had a blast on both of these rides. ;)

I've got a Volagi Viaje coming next week. Pics to follow.

Still working on the review. Handling reminds me of my Vaya.

52/11, what do you think this is, the road forum?!

Seriously though, that is a really sharp looking bike. I love those Campy black and red parts. I stole the idea and put red chainring bolts on the 105 crank on my road bike.

At 22.9 lbs just the way you see it, it's too heavy for a road bike. Besides, it has a compact crank with a 12-30 cassette and cx tires. The road thread would tell me to take it elsewhere. :) When I bought the frame I didn't realize that the frame was a mix of road and cross geometry. The chain stay length is quite short and accommodates the 30c cross tire, and I have a 35c up front.

Thanks for the compliment. It took 5 months to build. I'm just sorry that it's the end of the season and won't get to ride it much. Something to look forward to for next spring.

The season is just starting, what are you talking bout?
Might be over for roadies, but not CXers.

LOVE IT, the braking is so good and have spoiled me so much that I now think the 6700 Ultegra brakes on my Roubaix suck. The modulation and power cannot be matched by a caliper brake, no regrets.

How about comfort?
Those shifters/oil reservoirs look a little uncomfortable.
