Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

have you ever been professionally fitted? you could be getting a lot more power of your legs with a larger frame and a more forward saddle position. and your reach wouldn't be affected at all.

looks like both bikes have a 20mm setback post and the saddles are far back. if you weren't on the other side of the country i'd say come in to my shop and let me give you a consultation. just to try it out. you can always change it back
My Med sized Yeti has a 31.5" stand over height and the large has a 32.7 with a bottom bracket height of 11.3. That was the main reason for going with the med size.
Still all my rides are comfortable and I've never had a problem.

I'm 5'11", also with 32 inseam, and I have a Kona Jake in 54. It sounds like the Yetis have a similar standover to the Jake. I couldn't comfortably do a 56, as the standover is higher than my inseam. Would you fit someone for a bike with negative standover clearance in your shop?

Edit: Just realized that sounds kind of pissy. Didn't mean it that way, but I really don't understand.

I'm 6' and i ride a 56-58 top tube. It just depends on so many things. I probably would never ride a true 59. With a cross bike part of that comes down to handling. I prefer a slightly shorter wheelbase. I also have long legs and a short torso. There are so many factors it's pretty tough to generalize from one or two measurements.

It's so hard to tell over the internet how a bike fits someone. I'm 5'7" and am riding a 52 cm Crux but there is absolutely no stand over clearance, I might have been more comfortable on the 50..

[QUOTE=thisisbenji;12552517]It's so hard to tell over the internet how a bike fits someone.

Yes that is so true. Plus it's not like I'm new to this sport. I've been riding and racing all my adult life and I'm 47. After having many bikes the Yeti was my first complete bike internet buy. None of my local shops could get me what I wanted so I turned to Realcyclist.com and they did a great job of getting my bike to me. I did a lot of research on sizing and read as many reviews as I could find on the bike and each individual componet before I made my purchase. Overall I'm completly satisfied.

Very true. I confidently ordered a Jake in 54 (had to order from the web because I wanted last year's model) only because I previously owned a Jake The Snake in 54. Otherwise it's very difficult.

I guess fit is a very personal thing. I'm 5'9" and not sure of my cycling inseam. I've got a 52cm Kona Jake (541mm top tube), a 54cm Major Jake (551mm TT) and a 54cm Surly Cross Check (560mm TT). The Jake is a little small, but workable. The Cross Check is a little long, but workable. The Major Jake is just right.

My first ever skinny tire'd bike...

Bought today, haven't ridden it yet (other than the test ride). 2011 Origin 8 700CX...

Can't wait to take 'er out! Have to go back to the LBS (which is actually not-so-local at 1.5 hours away via the hwy and my truck...) tomorrow to pick up my other bikes left for work done

I like that Origin 8. Specifically, I'd like to know how you like the bars. All positions, especially on the hoods. Enjoy!

No hurry. Whenever. I just don't really like my ergo drops (still new though) and I'm looking for options. Really pretty bike!

Just got done converting an old steel Raleigh Grand Prix. Did change out the front forks, mainly because I didnt want to screw with trying to weld on the forks, and wanted something stronger. However I did scoop up some brake posts for the rear. Used a MIG welder since I'm cheap and its what was available. And they turned out at least functional. Which is pretty much the theme with the whole bike seeing as I'm cheap and in college.

here is my cyclocross/do it all rendition, which is a hybrid/29er I converted. I may change the frame next winter since I am a little streched out on the bike compared to my road bike.

I've only had chance ot ride it around the property still (between the neck having done it's thing-putting me hobbling on the cane most of the week-and some kinda dang flu...),but just from that (maybe a mile or so round and round and up the hollow?),seems pretty comfy. I'm hoping to feel up to a "real" ride by weekend or next week, probably road, but I'll get back to ya. And thanks for the kind words

Great! Hope you feel better. BTW, I still haven't gotten a chance to take a proper ride on my 2010 Jake that I got a week ago today. I'm really hoping for tomorrow.

Just threw this together over the last couple days, stole parts from my fixed gear and parts bin, then bought stuff like tires, brakes, and bar tape. Overall I'm very satisfied with it. ONly got like $150 invested in it. I'm going to try riding it to see if cross appeals to me, if it doesn't I can part it back out and loose very little on it, if I do like cross then I have a bike for next fall when racing starts again!

Jumping in on this thread because I think sizing is such an important issue. I am 5'10" but have short legs and my jake the snake at 52 cm with a long stem and slightly setback seatpost is a great fit. I demo'd a 54 and the standover was uncomfortably close, especially given the terrain I ride in norcal with lots of rocky/rooty singletrack (not all of it legal). Find the small size super maneuverable for hopping logs, curbs (my cross is my commuter), rocks, etc., but when I throw the light road wheels on for commuting or a long road ride, I don't really notice much diff between the jake and the 54 cm Scott road frame. Point is, there are numerous ways to get a stock frame to fit your dimensions. If you can afford custom or semi-custom stuff, by all means go for it. I'm a gym teacher.

On long steep or technical descents, I do stay upright and use the cross levers.

BTW, I have yet to try a frame longer than 54 cm that gives me adequate standover. Some come close, but with my rugby-player body (think refrigerator box in bike shorts) it seems the big companies (all i can afford) have a certain body type in mind.

My first bike, sold I think to a gullible youngster by a lbs owner anxious to get rid of some old stock, I had to lean over when at stops so the top tube slipped into the slot between my package and my thigh.

Finally rode the Jake today. 28 miles. It was so incredibly nice. I'm pretty sure I need a new saddle, but the bike itself was fantastic.

Great conversion/rebuild! I had expected more of that in here. De Vlaminck era comes to mind! I often wonder how many C&V cx-bikes are out there?

Yeah, its actually a pretty good bike. Running 32mm Vittoria tires and havent had a problem until today when pretty much all looked like this... But when I wasnt being stupid they worked really well and only played slip and slide a bike a few times (35mm prob would have been better but the clearance near the bb would have been minimal).

Mmmm and I need to learn/look up how to tune in canti brakes better cause mine seem to get worse as I ride, and dont stop me as well (feels like a lot more slack or something?)

Oh another thing... can hardly get my butt back far enough back because of the geometry for downhills... Wanted big enough triangle to easily shoulder. So in hind sight... next conversion will be smaller frame.

It's done. I've had this frame for a couple of years and it's been a hybrid and now it's a cyclocross bike.

I have no idea the manufacturer of the frame, but it is a nice one. 3 water bottle bosses, 130 rear spacing, internal headset, rack mounts, canti mounts.

I have a new Ultegra 6500 crankset on it with very slightly used RD-6500 and FD-6500 derailleurs. Dura-Ace 7700 brifters, Tektro CR720 cantis,FSA Wing Pro handlebars, Tektro cyclocross brake levers, Shimano 600 hubs with AlexRims rims.

I still have to change the cassette for a more road friendly cassette, probably a 12-24. I put a piece of narrow tubing over the front brake cable and wound the computer wire around it for a clean look. Racer Pro cables and housings (yeah, I know, it's a bit overboard). The bike tips the scales at 23lbs.

From what you can see in the pics, are there any suggestions?

Thanks,
Ian
