should I wait to upgrade to discs?
My redline conquest has disc tabs and I want to upgrade. Since this last season was the first season that discs became legal, should I wait until closer to this next season to upgrade? Do you think that brake companies and wheel/hub companies will be greatly expanding their 700c road disc systems before next season? hmmmm.

Do you race UCI events? Because, I mean, they were probably totally legal for you before now.
I say think about discs when you get a new bike, but no need to senselessly spend money if what you have now works fine.

I'm in the same boat. Cross racing all you're going to use it for? I want disc brakes because I use the bike for road riding in the Winter as well along with muddy dirt road rides. Canti brakes work ok in good weather, but are crappy when it's wet and muddy.

If you've got the tabs, you may as well go for it now. You can always upgrade again if companies come through with amazing stuff next year. My guess is they won't.
Disc hubs are pretty mature technology, though all of the good ones obviously have MTB spacing in rear. You could always put a disc brake in front, using a nice MTB hub, and keep cantis on the rear. Disc forks for racing seem to be uncommon but available. If your fork is ready, that's not an issue. The UCI decision does make the advent of hydraulic STI's much more likely, but I expect we'll see at least one season of pros using prototypes before they become available to the rest of us.
FWIW, I just put a disc fork and brake on the front of my Kona Jake, but I don't plan to use it for racing, having just picked up a used Major Jake for that.

My opinion.....discs aren't worth the extra cost or weight. Sure, you'll get extra braking power, but a well adjusted set of canti's will do for me.

well I had a super muddy race this year and a super wet race as well. I also had a few really wet training rides where I either the mud totally bogged up my forward progress (mostly because it was getting caught in the canti cables) or the rain made my brakes completely useless. Buying discs for only one wheel could work well for road use but it wouldn't help with super muddy terrain. I dunno I saw avid mechanicals on bonktown for $35 per wheel. For $70 it could be worth it... then again I have to get a new wheelset if I do get brakes... that ups the cost considerably. And I couldn't change out wheels after. hmm
