I don't think so. I don't have any experience with it, but based off the components, I'd go with something like this:

https://www.bikesdirect.com/products/..._pro_rival.htm

Rival level components.

The chatter on the Mares Cross in the UK, where it is sold by a major online retailer, is generally very positive.

Compared to a BikesDirect bike - well, will any bike ever beat a BD bike for component spec at the same price?

Everyone seems to love the Cross Check and they're versatile, long lasting, and very re-saleable. Otoh, I wouldn't worry about crashing any crosser except perhaps the super-light and super-expensive all CF race bikes. Crashing off road is usually a nicely soft experience - a wheel goes from under you and the bike goes down on its side while you travel through the air. It's fun!

So did you buy the Focus? I just purchased it and for what I plan to do with it, I think it's a well made bike with average components. But for $699, I think it was worth it. I'm not sure I would have paid $1099.
