Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Let's see your gravel grinder/CX conversions!

Nice. Franken-ness is what this thread is all about How do you like the thumbies in that position? I ran the exact same shifters for a while until I could find a good ebay deal on a set of barcons. Those shifters are surprisingly good for the price, but I could never find a location that I liked.

They're Suntour frictions from the '80s. I hear ya' regarding the placement challenges with these on drop bars. I had to use a longer bolt for the clamps and reshape the clamp a little bit to get them to fit close to the stem where I wanted them. Although I haven't had too much opportunity yet to ride with them in different situations, so far the placement seems to work ok for my needs on this particular bike. More time & miles will tell for sure, I guess.

It took a little longer than I expected and cost a little more than I planned, but it was a rewarding experience. And I've put a little life back into an old bike.

My old Rockhopper.

My "new" Rockhopper. The plan was to re-use much of my old road bike which had major bottom bracket/frame issues. Turned out I wasn't able to re-use as much as I thought. Wheels, cassette, seat post. The rest, pretty much, new.

I took it for a "shakedown" ride yesterday. It was fun to take it off the pavement and get a little muddy. This is likely to become my new commuter.

My old '80's Gianni Motta that's too small for me but turned into a great CX bike, 32C tires barely fit and is great for everything but serious mud due to clearances. I just installed some dual pivot brakes which have much greater stopping power than the old Campy SR sidepulls.

Just a blast to ride and cost me just about nothing, will build a true CX bike when funds and time permit though.

This has its own thread so apologies for those who have already seen it:

1988 Peugeot P41, rebuilt with a parts-bin drivetrain and brand new longdrop Tektro R559 brakes.

3x8 STI shifters (Sora/Tiagra mix)
Deore LX rear mech
RSX triple front mech
48/38/28 Shimano triple crank from my wife's hybrid (I swapped it to put her on 165mm cranks)
R500 wheelset

There is a shedload of clearance for the 700c/35 tyres, I reckon I could go at least 700c/42 on there without issue.
