Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

That's weird the 28's didn't work with 23mm rims. I know people who run 23's on 25mm rims! Seems like bead issue to me.

Too bad you have to stick with Schwalbe. I have no issues with Schwalbe tires, but most of their tires are HEAVY (though long-lasting). I would have suggested Grand Bois tires, as their Cerf tire is the best 26mm tire I've ever ridden. Grand Bois is having a big sale right now, too. I believe about $32/tire and shipping to the US is $10 or so. Two tires, $74 shipped. I also ride the Hetre which has been excellent on dirt.

My local shop told me the 28's should work on my 23mm rims. Schwalbe has a different opinion so maybe they know something about their tires that we don't. Perhaps the bead differs from other tires. I don't know but I'm a little disappointed that I can't use the Ultremos. So much so that I am considering replacing my Crank Brothers wheels with the new Mavic Ksyrium disc so I can use them. I do have another bike I can use the CB wheelset on so its no big deal.

I am going to inspect the replacement Ultremos that Schwalbe is sending me to see if the bead is any different from the ones I have. I suspect the ones I have may be an older production run when they were having some QC issues.

You may be having some communication issues. Generally, rims are described by their external width. 23mm external width rims are currently very popular. Perhaps that's what they thought you had. If your rims are 23mm internal, that's pretty big like a 29er rim. I can see that a 28mm tire might not work on a rim that wide.

I tired these 30/32 tires and did not like it. I put it on the rear and the profile is just too flat and made it sluggish. I do have the Roubaix Pro in the front at 28/30 and it works well there as the flatter profile helps with stability and makes the front less twitchy. I put a 25mm in the rear going with Conti 4000s GP II and really enjoy how much more lively it made the rear feel.
