Dynamo hubs

I want to get a dynamo hub front wheel for my bike. Sounds good so far, right? Well the problem comes when I try to find a decent price in Canada. I can find a lot of decent prices online, but importing the wheel results in 6.5% additional tax to the cost (not to mention GST/QST/HST), if it is assembled. The idea is that this encourages Canadian built... but I can't find any Canadian built dynamo wheels that weren't just shipped here so are really expensive, or the hub and the unassmbled wheel were sent here and then assembled, thus also really expensive.

If I buy a dynamo hub, and then ask my LBS to assemble it on my existing wheel, its going to run me $150 just for the assembly. So... I either pay for the assembly, or I pay the government for the import, in the end its a lot of money just so I can have an environmentally friendly bike light.

I'm hoping someone out there in Canadaland has a solution... if its "assemble your own wheel", I'm not really skilled enough to do that, nor do I have the tools.

I have a Shimano hub that I salvaged from a cracked wheel. It's a DH-S501. PM me what you feel is a reasonable price and you can probably have it. It's missing the connector for the wiring so you would need to get it somewhere else.

Thanks for posting that, but I'll still need to build a wheel with it. I was kind of hoping to find an entire wheel, with the dynamo already built... because I don't want to mess around with building my own wheel, and it seems like its going to be costly to have my LBS do it

But maybe I'm wrong? I can't seem to be find pre-assembled dynamo wheels in Canada to know how much they cost. It might be that if I have the hub and pay the LBS to assemble it, it will be cheaper?

Where are you located? I deal in Shutter Precision dynohubs and provide wheel building services in Oakville Ontario. PM me if you want to talk about your needs.
