Bikes: DIY

Many ebikes, especially DIY have throttles. The quietest systems are direct drive hub motors and the noisiest (probably) are mid-drives. Look at the tutorials on ebikesca to learn.

Bikes: 1980s and 1990s steel: CyclePro, Nishiki, Schwinn, SR, Trek........

Laws very, as well as enforcement of the laws. In many localities, the electric motor is supposed to only operate when you pedal. Most ebikes that your purchase are that way. Many ebike controllers have provision for a throttle, and many DIYers add a throttle to their bikes so that they don't have to pedal. Many of us who convert regular bikes to ebikes often leave the PAS (Pedal Assist Sensor) off, so that the our bike is controlled only by the throttle.
