Question Integrating Speed and Heart Rate monitor data with Map My Ride

Hi all,

I want to be able to integrate my cycling speed and heart rate monitor data with Map My Ride. I don't currently have any heart rate monitor and I have a simple speed only bike computer that I've been using, but I want to upgrade. My goal is to be able to view my current speed and heart rate while I"m biking but also be able to easily upload this data to Map My Ride to examine later on. This morning I used my android phone to capture my ride and then looked at the data online on map my ride. I could easily add something like the Polar H7 HRM strap and capture my heart rate data, but then I can't see my heart rate as I'm riding and I'd like to be able to do that. On the other hand, using my phone made it really easy to upload the data to Map My Ride when I was done. I just clicked 'Done'.

I am thinking about the Polar M450 or V650 with a heart rate strap- that would give me the ability to view and capture both my speed and heart rate data, but how easy is it going to be to upload the data from the M450 or V650 to Map My Ride? I haven't found any easy answers to that question yet. It seems like you have to disconnect the device from your bike and then plug it in via USB to upload. That seems like a huge pain in the ass. Can the Polar M450 bike computer share the H7 Heart Rate monitor data with my phone, or can the strap only be paired with one device at a time?

I'm also considering a Garmin Edge 25, but it it's a quite a bit more money than the Polar M450 for what seems to be nearly identical functionality, at least for my usage.

The other possibility would be to get a phone case that is water proof that I can mount to my bike. I'm less keen on this option for a few reasons. I'm a bit concerned that I will knock the phone off my handle bars when I'm riding and I'm worried that they won't be very water proof. I bike year round, including when it's raining quite hard. I don't want to lose/destroy a $200-$250 bike computer, but I'm even more hesitant to do that to my phone and the bike computer is designed to be used in the rain. My phone isn't. Even if I put it in a case, if water gets in and fries the phone's warranty won't cover it, and I doubt the case manufacturer will either - but I'm willing to consider that option if people have any suggestions.

So, I'm all ears (or, er.. eyes?).

Thanks,
Brad

Bryton Rider 310, $169 GPS bike computer with HR strap and cadence meter:

You can upload the FIT files it generates to MapMyRide.

I don't want to have to manually upload anything. I want it to be done automagicaly for me, or with a swipe of a finger.

Bluetooth HR strap + your phone?

You could use a Wahoo RFLKT to display your HR/Speed etc on your handlebars. The Wahoo Fitness app uploads direct to MapMyRide.

Bluetooth sensors will only pair with one other device at a time. So the HRM will talk to your phone or to the Polar computer at any time, but not both.

Polar's H7 strap is very comfortable for what it's worth. Maybe you can get the Wahoo reflector thing to work for you?

I've been using a Garmin Edge 800 for years; to upload the data you have to connect it to a computer over USB. Which is generally how you charge it, too, although it'll also take a charge directly from the wall or in the car on the way to a ride. Anyway, a year ago I got a GPS watch that does automatic uploads, you click done and it's online. Doesn't sound like a big deal, but it's hugely convenient. You said this is something you want, I can say it's something you get used to and not something I'd be willing to give up.

The Bryton is a nice device, but uploading is not a seamless process, especially if you don't use Strava.

Can you upload the Bryton to Strava with a single click or would it require a bunch of fiddling- downloading the data to a computer, selecting files, uploading, etc?

WHen does the Wahoo Elemnt come out?

Does anyone have the Polar M450 or Polar V650? Can they speak to how easy it is to automatically upload the data from the device to Strava? One of the parts about the V650 that I find appealing is that it will allow itself to be set up as a Heart Rate Monitor broadcaster, so I can rebroadcast the heart rate monitor data from the V650 to my phone. That helps out if it's a pain in the ass to upload the data from the bike computer itself to Strava or MapMyRide directly.

If you are using your phone to capture your ride data, look at the Wahoo RFLKT that has already been mentioned. You can get the RFLKT with the Wahoo Tickr (heart rate monitor) and Blue SC (speed/cadence sensor) for well under $200.00. These units will connect to your phone and allow Map My Ride to collect the data. The data is then sent to the RFLKT and displayed just as it would be on a Garmin or any other bike computer. You can use the MMR app to customize the screen display on the RFLKT to show you the data you want in the location and screen page you want. I've used this system for almost two years and the only issues I have run into was failure to update the firmware in the RFLKT and sensors. Downloading the Wahoo Utility will let you know when a firmware update is available and will install it to the devices for you. With these devices connected to your phone, you can use MMR the same way you are using it now and not have to worry about changing anything that you are currently doing to achieve what you want to do.
