iPhone distance and speed app
Can anyone recommend an iPhone app that will allow me to show trip distance ridden, average speed and current speed. I am ridding towpaths and bike/hike trails.
Thanks!
Thanks!

I use Cyclemeter and Wahoo Fitness apps for iPhone. Both are good but a bit different.
Cyclemeter's free version records and organizes more data, more usefully. But there's the splash screen delay, and no auto start/pause/resume. Cyclemeter was also more likely to stop completely if I dropped out of that app to check a map or other app.
Wahoo is quicker, simpler, and the auto start/pause/resume works well. Set and forget, very handy for a long ride with lots of stops and starts. And Wahoo doesn't stop completely if I switch to another app (such as my grocery list while I'm stopped for shopping). When I return to Wahoo it just picks up where I left off. But Wahoo records less data -- although that data may be recorded but not readily accessible.
But Wahoo does record the info I'm most interested in -- ride time, speed, distance, map route. So I'm using it more often now than Cyclemeter. But if I upgraded to the paid version of Cyclemeter I'd use it more often, since it would resolve most of the shortcomings, other than the quirk of stopping when I switch to another app.

I use ridewithgps. I liked it so much I'm now paying for the subscription.

The stopping of Cyclemeter, when switching to another app, is dependent on the app and whether or not the app has location services turned on. If the other app's location service is on, the lockup happens when the other app attempts to read the GPS data from the same port and clashes with Cyclemeter. If you know that the other app that you are going to use is going to clash with Cyclemeter and cause it to stop, before opening the other app, pause Cyclemeter until you are done using the other app. Then force kill the other app's background thread by double clicking the home button and swipe the other app off the screen.
By default, most apps will have location services turned on, primarily for marketing purposes. I turn off location services for every nonessential app, in Settings, and don't run any apps in the background when running Cyclemeter. This will also eliminate Cyclemeter from abruptly stopping in the middle of a ride.

Thanks, John V. I rechecked my settings for GPS apps and it appears the reason Wahoo kept running even when I switched to another app was because Wahoo was set to allow full time access, while I'd set Cyclemeter to allow location access only while the app is running. I'll play around with those settings and see what happens.
Right now I'm trying to figure out where the battery drain problem is coming from. Since the last iOS update my iPhone 4s battery drains rapidly, even though I don't use it as a phone and don't leave the screen on while running cycling apps. I can't think of anything else I've changed. If it's a glitch in the latest iOS update hopefully Apple will fix it soon.
