Holy crap! The biggest lake in my state is about a mile wide on average.

Yeah, it's huge, and it's unlike other rivers. It is actually a fjord, not a river. If I'm not mistaken, a river is formed by water coming down from the mountains whereas a fjord is formed by receding glaciers. The flow is slow, and the river is very deep, and, as I said, we have really tall and steep cliffs on the sides, though not as tall as the fjords of Norway. Check out the images of it you can see on google images.

Another thing I like about the Hudson River is that the views are spectacular everywhere I've seen it. I'm not sure, but I think I've been as far north as the city of Hudson, and maybe farther north. The mouth of the river is the Upper New York Bay in the New York Harbor. There it is very urban scenery, but the bay is quite wide in every direction.

I see Lake Chelan in Washington is 52 square miles, so you don't have any lakes that compare with the Great Lakes. Some places have big lakes, some have small lakes.
