Bontrager GoTime Quick Review
Kind of silly, but I wanted to give some props to the Bontrager GoTime, and this will be here if anyone searches for this computer.
When I got my bike, and thought about a computer, I did a bunch of Research. Trip 100, Trip 300 -- both not reliable. Catseye -- bought one, but the screen was tiny and the unit was ugly. Looked at Wahoo (may still get a Bolt later) Garmin, etc.
Decided all I really wanted was MPH, distance and a clock, and it had to be 1) easy to read, 2) not prone to issues (either dropping signal or, as in the case with some catseye, prone to change screen on bumps), and 3) affordable, until I found out my needs down the road.
LOTS of reviews on all sorts of computers -- basic and otherwise. But very, very few on the GoTime. But the reviews on the Trek website are almost all positive, so I went to my LBS and got one.
I really love this thing. It's easy to install (I followed this guys video:
) has nice rubber gaskets, is SUPER easy to read, has a simple, single button push for changing features, and is working flawlessly. It also looks kind of nice.
Cost me $33 after a local bike club discount and tax.
A few notes on installation:
1) After setting up the magnet, sending unit and receiver, it takes a few minutes for the receiver and sender to find each other, so go get a drink or something. Should be ready when you get back.
2) LED lights interfere with the signal. Keep your headlight on one side of your handle bars, and the receiver on the other (and keep the receiver on the same side as the sending unit). I thought it was broken at first, until I called tech support.
That's it!
I can't speak to longevity yet, but it's everything I wanted in a basic unit.
Side note -- I use Ride with GPS on my phone in my seat pouch, to map my ride, etc and the GoTime to give me direct feedback on my current ride. This replaced my idea of getting the Wahoo Mini, and I think it fits my needs. I might, as mentioned, get a Bolt down the road, though, if I find I need GPS on my handlebars.
