Strava live segments question

I have a Garmin Edge 820. I've got my Strava account and Garmin account linked, and a few Strava segments "starred." They show up on my Garmin connect account, but don't sync with my Edge. I understand live segments will work once I switch to a premium Strava account.

My question is this-for the live segments to work, does the Edge need to constantly be connected to my phone via bluetooth? Would I need to bring my phone with me on every ride for live segments to work? I really don't want to bring my phone with me if I don't have to.... :/

I've had my phone on "airplane mode" to not deplete battery life on long rides and the Strava live segments worked just fine (Garmin 810). From that I would gather that you do not need your phone.

Note: I've never gone for a ride without my phone in my jersey pocket or on a Quad Lock mounted on my handlebars.

They port from the phone once the Edge is powered up and connects via BT. You'll hear the beep and see the "Download Complete" at the top bar on the Edge. After that point, I don't think the BT connection matters. That's only if you want text notifications, or the dumb weather alerts.

The real question is, did you go into the settings on the 820 and enable Live Segments? Because you gotta turn it on manually. My 520 did Live Segments just fine for about 2 years, then just stopped one day. A factory reset brought them back.

thanks guys! I never ride with my phone so just wanted to make sure before I signed up for Strava premium. I did enable Strava segments on the Garmin
