it's quite possible they have multiple teams writing software, and the watch people know what they are doing.
My friend with the iOS and 830 reports that he has to have the app running to get notifications on his 830. Google says that inactive apps don't cause much load on an Android device, so that must be their solution to having background processes.

Agree. Garmin just sucks when it comes to BT on their bike computers. I don't know what it is, but maybe it's their anti-bluetooth prejudice showing through.

it turned out my 830 wasn't connecting automatically, even with the app running. Took some fiddling. Haven't used it since I got it connected though, so I don't know if it still is connecting

New Garmin 830 firmware
Edge 830 new version 5.0 is now available. It may solve some Bluetooth issues.
It specifically states fixed an issue pairing with iPhone 11.
