Interesting new Garmin radar data

i have not seen this before! cool data from a 20 ish mile commute home. the average slowdown stat is interesting. people aren't going very fast to begin with, and they don't slow down by much. i am not sure what the difference between "average pass speed" and "average relative car speed" is, since you'd think a car that didn't pass would have a negative relative speed, making it impossible for the latter to be higher than the former, but it is. cars that are going faster, then don't pass!?!? i tend to pass a fair amount of cars on a route like this, but i doubt the varia returns any data on objects which are going slower than you are once you've passed them. (obviously it can't return any data on something in front of you lol)

(and here's the route - yes, i turned a 1 mile commute into a 20 mile commute because it was a nice day)

I think that average relative car speed is just average of (car speed minus your speed)

Probably that is all averaged over the total time it is detecting cars, while the pass speed is only while close to you. Maybe the pass speed is also relative.

What are you using to get that data?

I have had a Varia RTL 515 for 3-4 years and never ride without it. I have not seen the type of data that is shown in the original posting.. I went to the Varia app on my phone thinking there was a history of past rides that would show this data for each ride but there is no such history. Is this data only generated by a newer Varia model or is there another app, other than the Varia app, that displays it. Seeing this type of info is not crucial to my rides, but would be interesting to see.

I have the same question as a few other posters for mschwett : where did you find that data?

it’s in the ride summary data on the cycling app i use with my varia, hrm, power meter. it seems that the data is generated/interpreted by the app, not the varia? it’s basically an analysis of the data used in real time to generate the little colored bar along the side of the screen.

i assumed this was something the varia headset or garmin computers also did, but perhaps not? the app i use is called cadence - it’s excellent and this data was added a few weeks ago.

I didn't have time to do anything other than search for it, but if anyone is interested, here is the URL: https://getcadence.app

Apropos to the discussion: https://getcadence.app/support/what-...-metrics-mean/

the passing summary is very interesting!

it would maybe be interesting to compare how much cars slow before passing on the same road at the same time, but with, say, different lights, helmet, high-viz gear.

i assume cars will behave the same whether tubeless, di2 or mechanical, hydraulic or disk, steel or carbon, clipless or flats. 😇

Developer of Cadence here, just wanted to clarify the data a little. Only values of cars that passed are considered. So if a car was coming up on you super fast, but never got within 10m of you and turned away, those stats wouldn't be used anywhere.

"i am not sure what the difference between "average pass speed" and "average relative car speed"
Average Pass Speed is how fast the car actually passed you at the time of the pass, in relative speed. If you were riding at 10mph and the car was driving 20mph, then it passed at 10mph.

Average Relative Car Speed is the average speed that every car that eventually passed you was going relative to you every time its data was recorded.

The next update to Cadence will also include support for uploading your radar data to MyBikeTraffic.com. If you use a Garmin head unit, you can use MyBikeTraffic's ConnectIQ app to get similar data.

Another app that intimates that it's free and then hits you up for subscription fees as soon as you install.

It is free for pretty much all functionality of similar apps, like Strava. You can record your rides and view your stats for free. Additional functionality (like radar support) is indeed $20/yr or $40/yr. I wouldn't be developing Cadence if it didn't have some mechanism for actually making money...

To the person who sent a private message about support for Trek's CarBack: I can't reply because I don't have 10 posts here yet.

I'd love to add support for CarBack but they haven't opened up that data yet for third parties. It only works in Trek's own app. If they allow other apps to read the data, I'll add support.

Thanks for the Cadence app info. Others asked to identify it as your original post didn't cite the source of the radar data. The data from the Varia radar unit is not included in Varia or Garmin Connect apps.

Quickly looking at Cadence site, I am seeing that you need to have the paid Elite level of the app. The free version does not include Radar data.
Cadence Elitecosts $5.99/mo or $39.99/yr. I will pass on that subscription.

It takes a few extra steps but the radar data is also available when using a third-party free, IQ Add-on (Donations accepted). This is installed to the Garmin computer and requires signing up to My Bike Radar Traffic. Also requires a Strava account.
https://mybiketraffic.com

Garmin IQ Connect Add-on app explanation here:

I use the Varia RTL 515, here is an example of what I see on the site. I find the info very interesting. my rides are short and I can usually find the vehicle that passed me at 70+ mph on a back road. BTW, I think that the Cadence graphics are at another level comparatively.

Cadence works with the Bryton Gardia and will show the same stats as it does for the Varia.
