Just checked Shane's YouTube channel for anything on the Wahoo radar, but alas, nothing as yet .

DCR has a mini review of the radar. Radar is fine but won’t work with Varia mount (off by a mm too thick). Bad move by Wahoo.

I agree. Really stupid move given the plethora of mounts that are Garmin compatible.

what a horrible fail on the mount.

i make my own mounts so i could just make two more, but between that and it being ugly as sin, it’s a pass.

DesFit has a quick and dirty video on the Wahoo TRACKR Radar mount at

AFAIK, Wahoo have always had a slightly different quarter turn mount on their GPS computers compared to Garmin. So I’m not surprised that this uses the same quarter turn system as their head units (as confirmed in the above posted video). Garmin probably have a patent on their quarter turn mount.

I think the Wahoo design was the same, the engagement was 90 deg. from Garmin.

See the video in post #7
The tabs are different and won’t insert into a Garmin mount.

This adapter might work to convert a Garmin mount:-

OK, I’ll buy that. I think on older Wahoos, like the Bolt I owned briefly, it was just a 90 degree mismatch. Seems they’ve changed the design.

I’m not sure about that. I just knew that they always had different adapters. I only have Garmin mounts on my own bike.

I assume it's because garmin has a patent, but maybe wahoo is just being difficult.

I do wonder that, but then they do not seem to have a problem with other manufacturers using the design.

It's only mildly disappointing to me that Wahoo didn't tackle the-- what, decade old?-- mount issue with the Trackr. This was the same complaint people had when Elemnt came out, and we survived that, so while it would be nice having interchangeability, the actual costs of getting a new Wahoo mount insert for a specific Varia mounting clamp probably won't be that much. I use Neat Component mounts for my Varia (because Garmin mounts are rubbish) and those inserts are $10 (plus shipping). They don't have a Wahoo mount yet, however, so fingers crossed.

Honestly though, there's very little compelling me to switch to Trackr from Varia right now anyway. I do use Wahoo computers, but it's the better battery life in Trackr that's the main appeal; it would be nice not to have to worry about charge level as much. I'm neither here nor there on the other stuff, and think that given the Trackr styling, a custom made mount to follow the design lines would look better than just replacing the $10 inserts in my Neat mounts anyway. Like the stock Varia mount, the stock Trackr mount looks bulky and uncouth to me.

I'll probably not be an early adopter on Trackr, and instead will wait to see what aftermarket mounts come out for it. That said, if Wahoo offers a package deal with the Trackr and new Roam3, I might throw in for that...

I'm not sure why so many companies have decided now is the time for radars. Apparently there are a lot of them, there is a gplama video called "don't buy these radars."

Simoly because the Garmin Varia became so popular and is relatively expensive. So now there are both direct competitors and cheap knock-offs to choose from.

Seems to me that Garmin has sold the Varia for as little as $130 in the past, and I'm pretty sure they could do it again. As a side note, it looks to me like Amazon is selling counterfeit Varias.

it could be that Garmin licenses the patent for
Free to anyone making accessories that don’t compete with Garmin products.

Or simply that accessories coming from China often don’t respect patents, not that Garmin would have any incentive to stop them since they are effectively promoting Garmin use and their own mounts are very much an afterthought. But I can see how Garmin would be much more motivated to prevent Wahoo from copying their mounting system.

Yes - "free license" can also be "non-enforcement". But Garmin could certainly enforce its patents against any imports to US that infringe - there's a specific procedure for that under Section 337.

Having read DC Rainmaker article now, it's unclear whether Garmin actually has patents or other IP to protect this, and appears not to be enforcing it perhaps against other competitors of Garmin so . . . maybe just Wahoo deciding to continue with its ecosystem instead?

There are hundreds of companies, both Western and Chinese, manufacturing products that use the Garmin mount.

This is Wahoo's own decision. It has nothing to do with Garmin holding or not holding or enforcing or not enforcing patents.

Bikes: RSO E-tire dropper fixie brifter

Could just shave off the oem mount & adhere on your favorite style 1/4 turn. Preemptive future degradation plan...

Having watched DCRainmaker's preliminary video on the Wahoo TrackR Radar and not having a Garmin radar, hence not having an issue with a mount, I am may actually go with the Wahoo over the Garmin. USB-C for starters!
