so when my wife's led light swamps my halo and I can't see it's light patch on the ground any more, is my light basically not there? What about the other night when I was riding w/ a neighbor and his dyno halo light patch was right there in the middle of my more diffuse one? Was there adding, or lumens, or lux, or anything like that going on there?

The light is still there, but the phenomena you're describing is more how the eye perceives light (or in your case an area of light in a sea of blackness.) The lux from your light adds to the lux of everyone else's light.
