Planned on mounting it using 2 lock blocks on the stem with a shim if necessary. The one you linked to looks pretty good, any real difference between that and the $70 models: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.18071?

One other thing, is there a reflector or something that can be rigged up to stop light going into the sky and on-coming drivers eyes, at 900 lumens that can't be too good?

Thanks

AEO 04-06-09 09:34 AM

optics, different power draw and difference in modes.
cree probably has something, but they're not just 'drop-in and change the light pattern'

check there: http://www.cree.com/products/xlamp_part.asp

daven1986 04-06-09 10:19 AM

Thanks, I guess it doesn't matter too much which one I go for. Wondering if a bit of metal above the light would shield it enough?

AEO 04-06-09 10:29 AM

yes, it certainly would.

daven1986 04-06-09 10:36 AM

Thanks for your help :)

I plan to take the plunge soon with one of these and one of the tail light ones :)

edit: think I found the throw light I need: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3356

That's a fairly large torch - I hope you aren't planning to helmet mount it ?

daven1986 04-06-09 04:09 PM

lol, no that would be on the stem using 2 lock blocks with this perhaps one: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.14212 - more floody than the wf-1000 AEO linked to, so would suit the set up I am aiming for.

My reasoning being the throw one will light up the road far ahead and the flood will provide spill for seeing the periphery and also allowing cars to see me.

The fenix I have at the moment will be on my helmet. Then the red torch will go on the back :)

I think you'll like that setup a lot.

daven1986 04-07-09 01:33 AM

:) thanks, am still not sure whether to go for it now or wait a bit and see if anything new comes out, because I don't really need it until next winter as I don't ride much at night now.

well, the lights are great to have around the house too if you don't want to wait.

I got my used P7 from another BF member yesterday. Did not have time to take it for a ride, but I did take it out in the front yard to blind any nocturnal animals or drivers who had the misfortune to be in the area.

All I can say is WOW! The thing made the street signs at the other end of my street glow! I do think I will end up having to make some sort of hood to use on the light when I mount it on my bars. This is the light I bought:

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12623

Would like to see what others have done about making hoods/deflectors for their lights.

Can't wait until the next Cub Scout camping trip in May, so I can win the flashlight bragging contest as we sit around the campfire!

Could probably make a quick hood using an aluminum can and some tin snips.

daven1986 04-07-09 08:46 AM

I was thinking about something like that to reduce glare into other road user's eyes, so I could run it at full power :D

The reason I can see for waiting is that during the summer I am sure someone will come up with either a better design or a better emitter. At least now though I know what I want!

I was thinking of using some of the material we use to make molds and the vacuum former at work, and a piece of rod stock of the same diameter as the head of the light, and some zip ties. If I go this route, I will let you know.

Just got back from my first night ride with the MTE P7. I am won over to flahslights for bike lights. I will be selling or giving away my 15W halogen Marwi NightPro to someone here in Dallas.

Had the 140 lumen Coast Lenser on the helmet and the two lights together gave me all the light I will ever need for my 10-20 mile night rides.

daven1986 04-08-09 01:53 AM

what was the throw and flood like with the P7? Did it dazzle drivers? How far ahead did it allow you to see and did it highlight the road enough? Also were you running it on high? Thanks

You probably already know this but I thought I might mention you'll want some extra batteries along especially for a 20 miler. I immediately quit using my 15W Cygo when discovering these but one thing it did have was a battery that lasted a while.

To answer daven's quesiton from my perspective, yes I do run it on high and it lights very, very well.

The throw was surprisingly long. Luminscent street signs a block or two away were glowing incredibley bright. I focused the hot spot about 30 ft in front of me and I could see every crack, rock, stick, etc on the road with absolutely no problem at all. I may try to move the hot spot out a bit next ride and see how cars react with the light pointing a bit higher. Avg. speed was around 15 mph but got into the mid 20s a few times and I was not outrunning the light. The light was very floody, almost too much so for me, but I could see as far as I needed.

I did run it on high the whole time and I do not think it dazzled any cars, as I did not get flashed, brighted, etc by any of the cars that approached me or overtook me.

Road a heavily treed stretch of road that usually requires me to reduce speed due to darkness, and I did not ever find myself wanting to slow down due to lack of light/vision.

I had the exta 18650 in a ziploc bag in my saddle bag.

I have a cheap Kodak digital, but I will see what I can do.

Thanks for that :) I still am not sure whether it is worth me getting both the spot and the flood versions of the 2*18650 lights to cover all bases. I want the 2 battery versions for extra run time :) but may just go for the 1 battery version but get 2 batteries.

Glad you like the light. I assume you are reviewing this without a hood on the light - i.e. as the light comes.

Thanks again

Daven

jsharr 04-08-09 10:24 AM

Yes, light was as I received it from the BF member I bought it from. Did not even charge battery.

My MTE P7 certainly dazzles on-coming riders and walkers. A rider shouted a complaint to me the other morning. Still, it's not dazzling anyone just now due to (1) the end of daylight saving and (2) my Trustfire charger burning out after 3 months. They tend to do this I gather from the comments on DX. Apparently there are fake Trustfire chargers around, odd as that seems.

I get the impression the burnout issue tends to happen in 220-240 volt countries such as Australia. I took it apart to see what I could see and I noticed a couple of components rated at 125 volts, even though sticker is for 110-240 volts. This item would probably not certification for sale in Australia -- it could be a fire hazard.

daven1986 04-09-09 05:43 AM

that is a bit dodgy. I think I am going to try to get the batteries and charger from a UK supplier - it may cost a bit more but at least I can complain to them if something like that happens.

What do people think of this one: http://www.caving-gear.co.uk/show_product.asp?id=790

thanks
