Vega 200?

Does anyone have the new light and motion vega 200 or even the vega 120 for that matter. i had the old vega and liked the all in one feature but the mount basically was designed wrong. the new light has a redesigned mount and i am wondering if anyone as tried it yet. i will likely get it from performacne when they get it in stock.
thanks

I ordered one of the beasties from Rei on Monday, as an upgrade to an older Vega (which will become my backup light). Probably won't receive it until sometime next week, since I opted for the most economical (i.e. slow) shipping method. I'll post my thoughts after taking it through a few runs.

It's been a longer wait than I had intended, but I'm finally back to report on the beastie after taking it on numerous excursions. My overall impression is quite positive.

Pros:
  • Bright, with a good beam pattern. While most of my commute is along reasonably well lit streets, there's a significant portion which gets quite dark... this light makes me feel quite comfortable navigating that stretch, whereas it's predecessor (the original Vega) never seemed fully up to the task.
  • The unit is fully self-contained, so there's no external battery requiring a bottle cage or lashed to the frame. This makes for a compact, easy to remove package when you reach your destination... very nice from a commuting perspective.
  • The mount is attached to the light and requires no tools, so it's quick and easy to move the unit between bicycles. Despite my initial reservations about the rubber strap, which is actually fairly thick, it seems to hold quite well and isn't showing any signs of wear at this point.
  • The unit has a 2-hour runtime on the highest setting (200 lumens), which is more than adequate in my case... this increases to 8 hours at the lowest setting (50 lumens). While I can't vouch for the entire 2 hours, as I haven't run it completely dry, it has gone for 90-100 minutes on high with no visible sign of losing power.
  • Smart charger with auto shutoff, so there's no worry about damaging the batteries if the unit is left plugged in for too long. I'm pretty sure that the "smarts" are integrated into the unit itself, as the were in the original Vega, rather than being incorporated into the plug. Which brings me to the next point...
  • It uses the same plug as the older Vega, so those of us upgrading have a spare charger.
  • The weight of the unit, not that I worry overmuch about such things, is only 240 grams (0.53 lb)
  • If you have a question about the unit, Light & Motion is very responsive and helpful by telephone.
Cons:
  • Since the mount is affixed to the light, you need to set the angle every time you attach it to a bike. This is a pretty minor point, since the design allows the angle to be easily adjusted while riding.
  • The unit ships with only a (minimal) Quick Start Guide, which refers you to the Light & Motion website to download the full manual... a document which doesn't exist at this point. When I spoke to them in February (15th or 16th, IIRC), they indicated that it would be available by mid-March, but that deadline is already a month old with no sign of the manual.
  • Don't bother trying to reach Light & Motion via their contact us webpage... it appears to be little more than a virtual black hole, from which no inquiry can ever escape. This matches my experience in the more distant past, so I'm fairly certain that it isn't a recent anomaly.
From a commuting perspective, this is a very nice product which I wouldn't hesitate to recommend (despite the currently lax documentation). I very much doubt that it would be adequate for nighttime racers or trail riders, however.

I just noticed last night that the manual is finally available for download from the L&M website. Judging by the timestamp, it appears to have been put up on 16 July... not exactly a speedy delivery, but it does resolve my primary complaint about the unit.
