Need a new bike computer....I think(?)

I have a Garman 305 that I took off another bike and am trying to put it on my new Sirrus Expert. Only problem is that there is a inch or so gap between the pedal and anything that I can hook the sensor on for the speed and cadence. Has anyone found a cure for this? On my roadbike, I had 4 quarters taped together as an extender.

If no way to fix that, what is a good computer for speed/distance, heartrate and cadence?

I heard Polar makes several, but that they last about a year and then you need to send everything back for new batteries. Any ideas on buying a new one...budget ~$200??
