Help with bike Computer purchase

Hi all this might of been asked already but i could not find thread. Just wondering i currently use a Cateye v2c and loved it until a couple of months ago, gave me button troubles so i was stuck on same screen. I am currently looking into a new computer and i would like to get one with a HRM doing all the research on line on different ones i have encountered mixed feelings about all. I came across the Garmin edge 500 and just wondering what feedback i can get on this computer from yo all or any other ones you have had.

Do you actually need the GPS? Notice how Garmin says the battery life for the Edge 500 is "up to" 18 hours. If you don't mind charging the battery frequently, it's not a problem. It'll be nowhere near the convenience of your old v2c though.

I have a Polar RS300X with the optional GPS pod. Even though it doesn't do any mapping or even route recording, I like it because it is small, absolutely waterproof and gives speed and distance info regardless of the activity (I also xc ski and tour with kayak). But if I were just biking, I'd probably look into normal bike comps without GPS.
