Extending battery life of a boombox

This thread is NOT for those who want a quiet ride! I have a boombox that I sometimes like to strap to my luggage rack, but am running into a problem: it kills my batteries (6 D cells) at max volume. Anybody out there have experience either wiring an extra set of batteries in or otherwise providing alternate power to extend battery life?

I'd wire up one or two RC 9.6V NiMH battery packs. Take it to a hobby shop if you want to see what will fit in the current battery compartment.
