iPhone apps

Hello

I am just getting into biking. Just got my new Trek DS 8.4 and looking forward to first ride tonight and this weekend.

I am wondering if there are any iPhone apps you can recommend to track speed, miles rode, and perhaps map route and show average speeds on flat and hilly terrain. My thing I am looking for is speed, average trip speed, distance. Would also be nice to have a log to track progress.

Thanks

I'd recommend you check out mapmyride. It tracks most of that. It also logs to their website for tracking overall. There is a few things its missing IMO, but overall I haven't found anything much better.

I've used both B.iCycle and Cyclemeter. They're both pretty good. It's been a while since I used either but back when I was using them I like Cyclemeter a bit better. They've both had many updates since then so I don't know which is better now. The main issue I had was battery life of the phone. Full charge it would only go for 2-2.5 hrs or so, even trying to keep the screen off as much as possible. There are bike mounts for the iPhone that include auxiliary batteries, you could rig up some other external battery, etc...

I don't know anything about the others, but just a side note, for $20/year you can upgrade to the 'Elite' status which gives you some more stats, but the biggy is it allows people to track you in real time when you're out riding. The family loves that and I love that they know where I am. You can choose to auto post to FB and/or Twitter (you can do that w/o the Elite status) whenever you start a ride or you can have it post once your ride is finished if you don't want folks seeing where you are in real time. I had a friend that used Runkeeper which is why I started using it.

I use MapMyRide. It's free, has all the bells and whistles you need. I just keep the phone in my back pocket. I don't trust the bike mounts.

You can also use the app for running. Your profile on the site will enable you to track your workouts and you will get weekly e-mails about your workout mileage/duration.

I find routes in New England can get pretty complicate. One 25 mile ride I do is over 28 roads. I like an app that I can download a route to the phone and use it for guidance during the ride. Cyclemeter has that capability. Others may as well.

Right now I'm alternating between MotionX-GPS and Mobile Arts GPS. I can’t decide which I like better. The nice thing about the MotionX app is that it will send position updates to email/Twitter/Facbook at intervals to track my ride (I almost always ride alone).

I'm going to try Cyclemeter, I'm glad I dropped by this thread.

I've been using BikeMate GPS app on my iPhone and I love it. The UI is awesome, stores your routes, max speed, average speed etc.

Cyclemeter. Does pretty much everything I want it to and I like being able to directly post to FB so I can review my route later. But I am going to check out mapmyride.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Strava. It's my favorite by far. https://www.strava.com/iphone

If you use any of the apps mentioned above on your iPhone or iPod Touch, will the device still play mp3s at the same time or is it one or the other?

TIA,
Eric

I've been using mapmyride for a month or so and it's been great so far.

Will any of these apps allow me to import a route from my computer and then give me turn by turn directions?

i've been using motion x. It'g a gps app. It works well. It does use up the battery so for longer than 3-4 hours you may not have a working phone. Are all GPS apps power hungry. Does the gps chip set require that much power?

I've been using iMapMyRIDE+ with great results. GPS doesn't seem to drain the battery as much. Even after a few hours of mountain biking with music playing the whole time, I have more than 60% battery left. Please note, my Iphone is jailbroken and I have minimal apps (iMapMyRIDE+, Iphone's Music app, and 1 or 2 more apps) running in the background which does improve battery live.

I found several local mountain biking trails and uploaded (gpx files) to MapMyRIDE's website and it syncs with my Iphone. I choose the trail I am riding in the background and my current progress using GPS will be displayed instantly on top of the route. In other words, it will let me see where I am in relation to the trail. I choose to have verbal notifications of overall time and overall distance every 5 minutes (you can specify by minutes or by mile). The verbal notification will even decrease the music app's volume in order to let me hear my current progress. Got to love technology.

Screenshots below are from my iMapMyRIDE+ app. The left screenshot is a list of local trails saved and visible on the app and the right screenshot is of a local mountain biking trail (showing Elevation).
