Ok, I perused the forum and couldn't find what I was looking for, so here goes.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a good helmet mount that would work well with a generic flashlight of circular cross section (perhaps 0.5-1.0 inches). I know I could just use rubber bands or a strap of Velcro, but since I intend to use it for a long time and would like it aimed properly without a lot of hassle, I'm more than willing to purchase something that is designed for the purpose instead.

Is there such a thing?

I'm not sure about that negative review. As a part of a bike commuting incentive, I received a little flashlight and one of these mounts to mount it to the handlebar:

Looks like the same clamp design. While I wouldn't rely on it for the handlebar, a helmet mounted light is subject to a lot less vibration and shock. Worth a try, I guess.

The Twofish Bikeblock will hold an LED light to many helmet designs. There's further discussion here.

If you have an old inner tube, cut a short length off and then cut two slits along that short piece at each end. Ghetto fab but effective. Cost = 0

best helmet mount for flashlight is the zefal doodad plus.. It is made to mount a pump anywhere but works incredibly well to mount a flashlight on your helmet.. Many shops have them or you can find online.

I went ahead and ordered the one I noted on line. It wraps around the flashlight securely enough for a helmet mount, and should work pretty well. If it doesn't, I'll try some of those other solutions.

I'm one of those people who are lucky enough to own a helmet that allows a torch to be mounted by just laying it on the top of the helmet and using a piece of Velcro to keep in place. In my case it is perfectly aimed. I guess I just got lucky but the sad part is the helmet is quite old and I need a new one. Bell no longer makes the helmet I have ( I know because I asked them ) As I'm sure you know most helmets sold nowadays are totally worthless when it comes to trying to mount a torch on a helmet. They have so many oddly placed vents that mounting any kind of light is really hard to do.

About that clip mount you linked to: I'd stay away from that. I owned the bar version of that mount before and it was just a piece of plastic junk.

If you're going to buy a torch mount for a helmet it needs to do three things: fit on your helmet firmly, hold the torch and allow mode changes without coming loose. It also needs to have the ability to be aimed. That means it needs to have a "Tilt" feature.

I searched high and low and the only thing I could find was this mount by Lezyne. While I don't own one this one with the open "U" clamp looks promising. Even if it doesn't fit my 501B tightly it doesn't look like it would be too hard to mod. Glue a couple pieces of Velcro to the mount and if the torch fits in the bracket it should hold. Whether it will hold firm enough to work well is anyone's guess but worth the try. You also have a pivot too so the torch can be easily dialed in and pointed where you want. Yep, I see me buying one of these by Spring. If the clamp fits my torch and holds it well enough to keep it in place I'll be searching out a new helmet real soon.

Thanks! Actually, I also have the handlebar version of that mount, and you're right ... it's cheap plastic. I think that unacceptable for a handlebar mount, but I don't think it will be a problem for a helmet mount. It's already on the way, so I guess I'll see.

You're right about the tilt feature! I dunno what I'm going to do about that ... maybe use shims like some of the homegrown solutions offered here.

That Lezyne mount looks great, but I'm not sure it's the right size to hold the flashlight, and the spec doesn't say what the diameter is.

Geez ... you would THINK that someone out there would see the market for this sort of thing and just make one. Something like the Lezyne on the bottom and a Velcro strap on the top.

I took your advice years ago to use a Zefal Doodad to mount a flashlight on to a helmet and have never looked back. I tried a Twofish Bikeblock, but the Zefal Doodad provides a more secure and stable mounting system. Thanks again.
