Hi Everybody,

I am a new biker ( Diagnosed with Diabeties, loosing weight and loving it) and photographer by trade. I am looking for feedback to a question about wearing ear buds while biking.

I find that when I use ear buds while biking the electric cable hanging from the buds creates a sort of "Harmonic" ( like a guitar string) and I hear the wind passing the cable as I move forward quickly. I only wear buds while on a bike path devoid of cars.

I wind up turning up the volume to drown out the noise. Can anybody else who has the same issue please reply as I need some feed back to see if it is a universall problem, or am I a sort of freak with particularly acute hearing at the low range of sound? I think helmut straps and Sunglasses straps ( what a tangle mess) also add to the noise near my ears but it is the buds cable specifically I am addressing here.

It is also possible to hear this sound if wearing buds while it is windy and I'm not moving forward. The buds act like a sort of speaker to transfer the sound of the cable from the wind harmonics to my ear directly. ( like the classic kids toy of two tin cans and a string connecting them.)

All responses are very helpful and appreciated and will allow me to have a fuller understanding of this finominum, or I'll realize it is mostly me and it is not an issue that needs a "Fix."

Use a single closed earbud (noise blocking type) in the off-traffic side (probably right side). Run the wires under your shirt.

I can keep the volume lower with a noise blocking earbud than an open one, so I can actually hear better than with an open earbud.

Or use a bluetooth headset like the LG HBS 700.

I much prefer the over-the-ear foam headsets when I ride. I think they actually decrease wind noise while still allowing ambient car noise --which I WANT to also hear

I would also point out that I always use mirrors when I ride with headphones.

Ear buds...volume turned up...on a MUP in L.A.? Not a good idea! The bike trails around here are too heavily traveled and you need to hear what's going on around you. You will most likely be deemed at fault in the event of a collision.

Be careful out there. "They" really are out there to get us.



That said, run the cables under your glasses and helmet strap. Then, inside your jersey. That should take care of any audio harmonics. Running the cable under your glasses and straps also allow you to quickly remove a bud from an ear, and it won't "fall" toward the ground. It will just hand there off your glasses.

I mount the mp3 player on the helmet and route the cable along the helmet strap from above, securing with a little electrical tape. That should eliminate the hum from the cables (and gets the wires out of your way).

tried a micro fm earbud radio, and a radio shack thing to hear your CD player over the car radio.

transmitter so weak i was only getting one to hear the other in physical contact .

but I could hear over the air broadcasts..

so theory was to have a wireless connection , just too weak a signal output.


next kit I had a bubble fairing it quieted the wind noise, Ear buds, cassette player,
public library , books on tape. for the hour ride home..

Hum from cables? I get plenty of noise just from the wind rushing by my ears. Most earbuds make it a lot worse because they protrude into the airstream. I use sound attenuating Westone UM1 earphones that seal the ear canal. They're nice and quiet, like using foam earplugs. Of course you hear less with them (similar to what you hear in a car with the windows closed) so decide for yourself whether they're appropriate for your use.
