Air Zound Mods and Success.
Hi Guys,
I meant to post this before sorry about that, I have been very busy packing for my move to the Caribbean.
This was supposed to be the continuation of the Air Zound problem thread found here https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...rzound-problem but I decided to start a fresh tread about what I did to make the Air Zound horn better.
PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU CHOOSE TO MAKE THE MODS I HAVE DONE, IT'S YOUR PERSONAL CHOICE AND YOU WILL BE DOING SO AT YOUR OWN RISK. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGES OR INJURIES IF ANYTHING FAILS.
I will give you a some basic info on the Air Zound and the quick mods I have made.
The mount the horn came with is OK but not the best. I removed it for two reasons, first, because it wont fit my handle bar stem where I wanted it mounted and secondly, its a bit sloppy.
I used a single tie wrap on it and its been fine since then. Now that it is in place, I might remove it, put a thin coat of silicone on it just to help hold it in place and then attach a new tie wrap onto it.
The air reservoir the horn came with is inadequate at 500 ml (1/2 liter) and full air flow, as I said previously, however........great news, most 2 and 1 liter pop bottles work. I have tried them both and the cap threads are the same as the Air Zound bottle.
I used a 1 liter Pepsi bottle, Coke, Sprite or any other will work. I got way more usage time than the original bottle and I am happy with it. If you can find another place for your water bottle (I have a saddle mounted hydration system) you can use two 1 liter bottles with a T piece to join them. You can get a T fitting from an aquarium store. USE SILICONE TO HOLD THE TUBES ONTO THE T FITTING IN PLACE.
DO NOT CRUSH THE ORIGINAL CAP WITH EXCESSIVE PLIERS FORCE. To make the bottle change, use a channel lock or slip jaw pliers to open the cap after slipping down the protective cover to expose the bottle cap. The original cap has a dab of glue on it, so it takes a bit of force to open it.
DO NOT LOOSE THE BLACK SEAL WHICH SITS IN THE ORIGINAL CAP. Place about 3-4 turns of snugly pulled Teflon tape on the threads of the bottle you choose to use IN CLOCKWISE direction.
DO NOT TWIST THE AIR ZOUND CAP ONTO THE BOTTLE, INSTEAD TURN OR TWIST THE BOTTLE ONTO THE CAP WITH THE GASKET IN PLACE. I WOULD HOLD THE CAP UP-SIDED DOWN SO THAT THE SEAL DOES NOT FALL OUT WHILE TWISTING THE BOTTLE ONTO THE CAP.
Warp about 5 turns of electrical insulation tape tightly on the cap and 1/4 inch down the bottle neck. You can use a tir wrap too, this is to prevent splitting or bursting. Fill the bottle with an air compressor to 80 PSI.
I used 100 PSI and the bottle took it. DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Listen for leaks. An easy way to look for leaks is to submerge the bottle neck and cap into a bowl of water.
If you are happy, pull the cover over the cap, mount on bike and go trumpeting.
NOTE: YOU CAN WRAP THE BOTTLE WITH SURGICAL TAPE OR PACKAGING TAPE WHICH HAS THREAD FIBERS IN IT TO PREVENT BURSTING.
THE OTHER NICE THING ABOUT USING POP/SODA BOTTLES, IS THAT YOU CAN CHANGE THEM FREQUENTLY TO AVOID BURSTING.
Conclusion. This horn is VERY LOUD with full air flow, way louder than the Hornit. I am definitely getting EVERYONE'S attention in the City.
I am happy with the mods I made to facilitate more usage time and mounting.
I would definitely recommend this horn to anyone. Read post 30 here https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...-problem/page2 where I noted the pros and cons between the Air Zound and Hornit.
I am attaching some pics which are all self explanatory

.
Cheers and let me know what you think and if this works for you.
