Cycle computer recommendations

I'm getting back into cycling and am looking for a cycle computer for a roadd bike and a track bike. Hopefully something that I ca nmove from one bike to the other. I would like to do the heart monitor thing and I am a tech addict. I read about the garmin 1000 vs the magellen. Any other ideas? I had read that you might be able to mix and match components from the garmin/magellen? I'm new to doing this and could use all the help I can get. Thanks

The two main device types are smart phones with cycling apps and dedicated cycling computers. If you already have a smart phone then getting an app such as Cyclemeter and compatible sensor(s) (heart rate, etc.) are a good option. There are pros and cons for both device types.

The Garmin Edge 500 is a good entry point for those interested in a dedicated computer for training purposes but don't need street maps. It's MSRP is $200. Check it out at Garmin here or read an in-depth review by a master here. Garmin has added a few enhancements to the 500 since it came on the market 5 years ago.

To monitor heart rate you'd need to add an ANT+ strap such as the one Garmin sells. Some riders also want the cadence and speed sensors. They're all sold separately or as a bundle.

Note that most sensors that work with the iPhone use Bluetooth, while most dedicated cycling computers use ANT+. That means that the sensors aren't interchangeable.

Other dedicated cycling computers add street maps, and other features. For basic training data up to and including power meter readings (power meter not supplied) the 500 is one of the cycling standards.

Bikes: Trek Emonda SL6, Giant Cypress

I just got the new emonda SL6 with doutrap S compatibility. Silly me thought it already came with the sensor but when I decided to do more in depth research and pulled the rubber off the frame I realized it was only a fancy plug cover for where the sensor would go.

Anyhow, was wondering if it was worth it to get the doutrap s sensor since I will not have to use zip ties. But am now wondering if I should just get the standalone garmin 510 or the bundle as I would like to have the heart rate monitor but the other features would be useless to me if I got the doutrap s sensor. And does anyone know the difference between the team edition 510 vs just normal 510 version aside from color?

Another option is to use the RFLKT+ with your smartphone. This gives you a dedicated display so it will save the battery on your phone. It also allows for ant+ devices to be used. I'd consider that with the new Garmin magnetless sensors for speed and cadence.
