I'm fairly certain no-one was serious about the EMP generator, but if someone was, then yes, those who took offense to this unlikely gadget are correct. It would be irresponsible and foolish to use, if not requiring a power source too heavy to realistically carry on a bike. I haven't really considered it too deeply.
As for being serious, because getting from one place to another on two self-propelled wheels should be a serious business at all times.... My current gadgets, a light and a bell, and usually some combination of braky and shifty things are quite enough for me thank you. I will admit that occasionally I will strap down something funny, like a rubber chicken, just to make people smile. I have a theory that If I make people laugh, they are less likely to be grumpy, and less likely to try and run me over. This assumes they aren't texting, updating Facebook, eating, or slapping their kids around in the back seat while driving and not going to notice me anyway, but there really isn't any getting around that problem until the police start ticketing drivers for this bad behavior.
I have been wanting a low-profile button-type switch to change my head and taillights from annoying flashing to steady on the fly, but that would probably be pretty easy to wire up one of these days when I have the energy/time, and nothing better to do (OK, so never really). I think flashing tends to annoy people, which I don't usually want to do, but find it a necessary evil under certain circumstance.

I want eyeglasses with lenses that actually change shape to accommodate were I'm looking. So if close, they are shaped for close work, like writing or working on by bike. Fixed multi-focal are just too much of admitting my age.

I walked into a LBS and the hub on a Surely bike caught my attention. The hub had a built in integrated pump that works while the tire was spinning. Great for not having to top off the air on the tire weekly like on my commuting road bike.
The Pump-Hub
What gadget I like to see is a pannier made of solar panel so that I can charge my stuff while commuting.
For MTB. A high torque low rpm hub motor mounted on the front wheel would be nice. I have encounter some hills which I simply run out of gas while pedaling when I was so close to reaching the peak.

A dynamo is better than a panel. A panel only works when the weather is co-operating and is useless at night. Its advantage is when camping its a passive energy collector. I think ideally you want both. Panels and a hub dynamo.

I'd like a hexacopter drone with a paintball launcher-thingy mounted on it, for close air support. For under $400, too

You can get Solar arrays to charge 12v. Pretty sure they would be too heavy to be happy on a bike though.

There is something I would like and I may end up making it myself. I would like one f the low-mid priced action cameras with a remote head. I want the controls on the handle bar where they are easy to access (a small LCD to help me see what it is shooting would be nice) . The I would be able to mount the camera wherever I want to and still have easy access to the controls.
If I had this setup I would be more likely to shoot interesting segments of rides. It isn't something that would be impossible to rig, it is just a matter of extending some wires.

Hummmm that could provide most men with hours of videos of the back-side of women.... and an angry wife. LOL.
I love technology almost as much as cycling. I am a retired network guy and live in a computer controlled automated home. I do take my smartphone with me when I ride... but have yet to even install a cycling app. However.... next season may be different. I've decided I pay too much attention to mileage goals and logs. I am thinking of automating my logs by using a cycling app to collect and record the data.
Long post made short: The best gadget will incorporate my phone and an app. I don't want to zip-tie anything else to my bike and I don't want something else I need to charge before I can go ride.

What I wished existed was a device that made a low level sound like a bike hub when you're coasting, or a fishing reel when you have a fish on, so people could hear that I was coming up behind them. Usually there's a joke about putting a playing card in the spokes here, or how you could just coast the entire time, but it would be nice for the MUP and paths I ride a lot.

The eye following camera (head gimbal mount on the helmet) with the hexacopter paintball (self deployable from the back of your rack, with a charging cable runing to your Dynamo), all combine in a glass heads up display, just like the fighter pilots! We would have real entertainment on videos posted by commuters around the world of disrespectful motorist shootings!

I've wondered if it would be possible to make a reflector that works with a variety of round LED headlights to provide a properly shaped beam. You'd probably have the LED light plug in at an angle near the bottom pointing backwards onto a mirrored surface.

Would this work for you? You'd need a dynamo, though... Sinewave Cycles | Sinewave Cycles

I have a dynamo system already. What I would like, and I think is doable, is a front and rear camera system that recharges itself from the dynamo.
Each camera would have a small battery that would be recharged from the dynamo. They would also have separate SD cards and be looped. Would have to have night vision for the rear one. They should be motion sensitive, so they would start recording with motion (save on the batteries and never worry about turning it on/off).
The idea would be to have a recordable camera system for accidents or whatever. The cool thing would be that it would recharge itself and record, front and back, whenever you were on the bike.
What would be ideal is to recharge during the daylight commute, and use the battery power during the night time commute. So not to take power away from the lights.

I'd like a computer with servo motors that shift my two derailleurs the right way. My input would be a button-press (or knob turn or whatever) for higher or lower. It handles double shifts for me.

@PaulRivers, sometimes, I just ring my bell very gently, but I see your point. What you (and I) want is a passive sound, one that others will know we didn't initiate. I used to ride with a SunTour Perfect freewheel which had a loud ratchet. To warn pedestrians I was close to them, I just coasted. It worked.

I'd like mini-drones that could fly out ahead and behind and alert me to situations that might need my attention, including misbehaving vehicles and pedestrians.

these are in development at a couple of places. In addition, there is at least one vendor seriously developing a helmet with biometrics in it. All that said, expect the biometrics market to continue to evolve and explode in a myriad of new ways.
