I saw your K-edge combo mount adapter for Virb, curious, would it be possible to design it like the standard virb base kit?

how sturdy is the plastic on these mounts compared to, say, the garmin virb branded mounts?

Gus they are actually stronger since ABS used in everyone else's mounts (remember they are all made in China, using the cheapest manufacturing methods) is more brittle than nylon, these will give more before breaking, and it would require a lot of force to break them. Here is a YouTube video showing relative strengths, The parts Shapeways prints will be a lot stronger than the Formlabs resin one he tests first and the other nylon part he self printed.

Understood, I think I see the need, you then have two axis of camera placement without resorting to moving the mount in such a way that it prevents you from reading the bike computer.

correct, it also opens up the ability to utilize an edge 1000 in landscape which the current k-edge combo mounts do not as the camera can be adjusted horizontally 360 degrees

Okay, tried several ways to get the Garmin Flat mount to work on a K-Edge Combo Mount. Because of the size of the Flat Mount and where the two screw holes are located, it is not possible to mount them together other than using double sided tape. I came up with another solution

It has two sets of holes for the flat head socket cap screws, so the interface could be installed on either set of holes in the K-Edge Mount. This will work if you need to turn the Garmin mount 90° to accommodate Edge 1000 in landscape mode or a Forerunner 910/920 with the quick release mount.

This mount uses all the original Garmin mounting hardware, and requires one additional M4 nylon insert lock nut or M4 acorn nut for the thumbscrew.

Here's a picture of my Dinotte mount that you designed. Had to use a serrated washer to keep the light from rotating but otherwise it seems to work at least as good as the stock Dinotte mount(s).

How is the fit on the seat post, that is what I am most concerned with? Tell me if you like the overall finish (feels a bit chalky to me, but relatively smooth). Was it easy to get around the seat post? Did the nuts fit well? Sorry for all the questions, but it is hard to get feedback unless there is a problem. Thanks for the images.

If I had a lot of time, I would try to recreate the serrated face, it really is a lot of work with individual triangles placed around in a circular pattern. Your solution is quick and easy, you could likely just use a cheap metal serrated washer rather than the ones used on brake calipers.

The fit is good, as you can see in the first photo there's a bit a of a gap in the back but that just you can get it really tight on the seat post if you want to. Compared to the Dinoote mount the clamp closes more on the seat post. Finish is chalky and smooth like you say. Color-wise it pretty much disappears on my seatpost which is all I really care about. Nuts fit well, just not as flush as on the Dinotte mounts.

You might consider this type of design. It's not available in the United States and something I seriously considered recenty. I really like the concept and symmetry. Mounts on your top two stem bolts. Since I have a Garmin Virb, would be even better with a Virb specific bottom mount....

Duplicating it is not the issue. I am just not sure making it in nylon is the correct way to go. The part is aluminum with a plastic Gamrin insert. Making it in stainless steel the least expensive metal offered by most 3D Printing Services, would be cost prohibitive. I am working on some Garmin Virb/Edge stuff. Did you see my mod to the K-Edge to allow landscape mounting of the Edge 1000 and still retain the ability to mount a camera. May have to do the same for the GoPro since K-Edge was a bit short-sighted and only allows it to attach one way.

There are way too many settings and way too little information in the manual and set up documents - but I'll get there!

After a few mis-steps trying to get the machine and software to work, and work properly (that is a very general term at this moment!), something happened. The disposable print surfaces suffered a bit as you can see! I think the machine had the Z value messed up and was dragging the nozzle through the surface material.

The print is one of WheresWaldo's parts - a plain Garmin 1/4 turn mount plate.

@JonnyHK - Not bad for a first print, but it is obvious you have quite a ways to go with printer tuning. If your printer has auto-leveling, go through that procedure before every print, at least for the first dozen or so. That way you can get the hang of what it is doing. But if there is manual adjustments to the bed level do that first. The more level you can get it mechanically the better your first layer will turn out. I also answered your questions in the PM.

Stem Cap/Bolt for everyone to print or modify
 

Was fooling around a bit and created this for all you weight conscious cyclists. It is not in my shop but is available to anyone who has or has access to a 3D printer. It is a combination stem cap and M6 Bolt. It cannot be used to preload the headset bearings, but is ideal for anyone wanting to shed a few grams of weight.

To make it easier for people to use and modify I have included the IGES and STEP files for modifying.

I tried, but the mounting holes for the K-Edge interfere with the lock ring for the Garmin Flat Mount. That was going to be the better way, or so I thought. There was just no way to make it fit.

In the mean time I have been playing round with this design for the Virb:

Ever wanted to Chest mount your Virb without using a bunch of adapters or extension arms. Or maybe you need to mount a Virb on a dog harness. If you ever tried to use the quick-release J-hook GoPro clip with anything other than a GoPro. It always meant adding more hardware (nuts and thumbscrews and extensions). Here is the easier way.

The center of the Virb screw is about 65 mm from the top side of the QR clip. The angle of the mount permits the Virb to be rotated over 270° depending on which way the lens is facing. I am still working on the internal bracing so it is not uploaded just yet.

Received this today and while all fits, I don't have warm fuzzies. The side where the Garmin screw goes thru is extremely thin at the center, thin enough where it flexed quite a bit holding it and it cracked while tightening. That side is more stabilizing than holding so I am going to give it a go on my next ride anyhow, I run a lanyard for "just in case" anyhow.

ahultin has a good solution if you are willing to sacrifice a Garmin Flat mount and want to use the K-Edge combo mount. His solution cannot be printed with the current 3D printing technology in the materials currently available. It was the first path I explored before coming up with the current solution. I hope he posts the pictures.

I love this thread! I have not had need for anything you guys are making yet, but I am getting some ideas of my own. I have made several of my own parts in the past as I have access to lathes and mills at a machine shop, but this idea of additive custom manufacture is going to open a lot of new possibilities in biking! This is just the beginning and I bet this will eventually become its own forum as it starts to really take off!
