If so, I have three ideas:

1. Angle the mounting surface back 30 degrees?. The Virb can still be aimed at the horizon using the thumb-screw. Since the Edge computer now sits further forward, it should point towards the rider's head instead of straight up.

2. Instead of using M4 bolts, what do you think about using zip-ties? I have some standard 75lbs ones and some beefy 150lbs ones at home, I will measure the cross-sections later. I got the idea for this from the Racebone on Shapeways: https://www.shapeways.com/product/C84MQ54UB/racebone-garmin-handlebar-mount?li=related-items-solr&optionId=42451391

https://images1.sw-cdn.net/model/pic...1429681588.jpg https://images2.sw-cdn.net/model/pic...1429681588.jpg

3. For some extra stability, what about mounting to both aerobars? If Shapeways allows, this could be a parameter (I will have to measure the distance between my bars inside-to-inside). I got the idea from the 3T computer bridge: COMPUTER MOUNT BRIDGE - Accessories - 3T Cycling Road

http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/images/pr...dium/27763.jpg

I am always tinkering. The Virb is by far the heaviest of the mainstream action cams out there. I recently beefed up the arms, the mount for the Virb is identical to their flat mount and shouldn't be an issue.

I like the idea of mounting to both bars. Shapeways just introduced a customizer for specially made models I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but this could be a perfect opportunity Edge on one side Virb on the bottom stretched across both extension arms.

Waldo. Do you think you could design a rear mount that clicks into the Fizik saddles (they all have that special slot to lock in a saddle bag or light) that would allow me mount a rear facing Garmin Virb? That would be such an awesome mount because I could still mount a small saddle bag on the rails. Plus I could easily swap it between my road and cyclocross bike which both have Fizik saddles.

Thanks

Gus90 I know about the Fizik slot, ProLogo uses something similar based on a Topeak design. I don't own a single Fizik so even though I know how it works I have never seen it in hand. I didn't do anything about the ProLogo since the clip is part of a small plastic cover and not part of the saddle shell. I have my doubts about how sturdy it is.

I've got some Cateye light to Fizik seat mount parts. I'll take some images and look at it.

Might be OK for a lighter camera.

Probably right.

Totally doable now that I look at the parts. Might take me a while to mock something up though.

Cateye does two slightly different parts to suit a wide range of saddles.

Here's my back up light on an Arione VS.
Light is on the short mount.

The empty seat and also with the long mount.

It seems I don't ever clean under my saddle.

WheresWaldo 07-23-15 09:50 PM

JonnyHK, that looks promising. The slot seems to be part of the saddle shell, it will be much stronger than anything ProLogo does with their clip. I would love to see pictures of what you come up with.

I'll see about duplicating the clip end of things first and only then work on how to attach a light. I can do a GoPro style easily but I might email you the file and let you do the VIRB mount.

Thank you for looking into this. Ideally I'd love a long enough arm to clear my micro saddle bag as shown in picture. However something that'd work positioning the camera like in the second picture without a saddle bag would be awesome too. After all, I have jersey pockets for everything else.

Getting the camera all the way past the saddlebag will be a problem as it will wobble like hell and will need a very strong mount!

Suggest you go for something like this:

Do you think that would fit on a 2010 Giant Defy? Wish it came in black too. That is probably the best solution if I insist on keeping my saddle bag.

I'm not sure how many different aero seat posts that Giant make. Worth investigating - take your bike to a shop and compare with other model?

Oops, that has my fault, Black is on a separate screen from all the other colors and I forgot to enable it.

Did you ever get the Fizik saddle clip modeled?

JonnyHK 08-07-15 12:37 PM

Not yet. Have been busy with work and I'm currently in Bulgaria on business...

When I get back I'll work on it.

ItsJustMe 08-17-15 05:57 AM

I wanted to get away from the backpack (I really don't like riding with a backpack) and go back to the rack trunk, so here's what I came up with last night.

John,

It's kinda ghetto, but I like it.

Yeah, I thought about and sketched several more complex mounts, one insanely complex one that incorporated a designshine mount into a reflector bracket, but I couldn't figure out how to FDM print it without a ton of support, so finally I decided to go simple.

WheresWaldo 08-23-15 08:46 AM

Someone asked me to really beef up the 31.6 mount so he could mount a Rideye to his seat post. I am not sure why he wanted this instead of the actual Rideye seat post mount. But, I modified my current mount to provide 2" of clearance for the Rideye (it only needs 1 9/16") and doubled the thickness of the walls. It is definitely my sturdiest mount yet. It is Mid-Length and so far only available in 31.6. I will have to make one in 27.2 so I can use it myself. It should also work with heavier cameras like the older Virb (w/GoPro adapter, new Virb's are already GoPro mount compatible).

Sorry all - it has been a frantic month and it isn't stopping. Flying to London tomorrow.

I have done some measurements and initial modelling, but I also had another idea.

Instead of recreating the whole thing (i.e. the part that clips into the saddle) I thought about just creating an adaptor.

Small part that combines a GoPro mount with the same mount design as per the back of a Cateye light. This way you use the existing Cateye part to clip to the Fizik saddle, but instead of having a tail light attached you have this little GoPro mount.

When I get back in 10 days I'll work on the following:
- Cateye/GoPro mount (so you can use any Cateye mount)
- Fizik seat to GoPro

Ion Air CamLOCK Direct GoPro Mount

I have been looking around for an Ion adapter for gopro mounts. I came accross a video in youtube which made me interested in your item https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFb-gBMweW8 . Unfortunately the video was showing that the adapter is not that flush and wiggles a bit. Just want to ask if that has been fixed already cause if this has been addressed I am really interested. By the way does Shapeways allows payment thru paypal? So my 2 concerns are is the adapter loose/wiggle problem fixed already and if I can pay thru paypal when I purchase it at Shapeways?

I had two meetings cancelled today, so I put the spare couple of hours to work for your benefit!

http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=473730

Here's a very simple part that combines the mount from the back of a Cateye light with a GoPro mount.

http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=473728http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=473729

Here you can see both together (the light and the new part) and also with each clipped on to the Cateye part that slots into the back of a Fizik saddle.

http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=473725http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=473726

Here you see the two parts inserted into the saddle.

http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=473727http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=473731

Now seen with a GoPro camera (newer small Session type, but any other would work).

The clearance between the camera and the saddle bag would obviously vary depending on your camera model and the exact mount set up, but this all works.

EDIT: up on Shapeways if you are really keen to have one!

@SixPackABS I was able to have an email conversation with the guy that posted the video. I made changes to the ION mount based on those conversations. Shapeways customer service is very good and he was able to have them replace the mount with the revised one. I hadn't heard from him since that time. It was modified so that all side to side and up and down movement was eliminated.

@JonnyHK What happens if the camera mounts from the top?
