I've not done those but Lake Garda is awesome. There are no cycle lanes but all the drivers were respectful. I can't imagine the lake district being a poor choice for cycling, enjoy!

There is an established route called the 'The bike route for the Lakes of Lombardy' (La Ciclovia dei Laghi in Lombardia) It is only 160 km, but it could give you ideas

It's a very good choice.I don't know how many days you have ,but from the lake of Como to the lake Maggiore, including Lugano and Varese lakes you can do a nice and not too exhausting trip during ten days if you can do about 80 km per day....

The Garda lake is another situation ,because it's a bit far from the Others, but it is the larger italian lake and is not too far from Dolomites....

I was last summer at lake Iseo and loved it. Lake Garda is very crowded in the summer.

Thank you for your tips,
I’m French and work in South Italy, I’m thinking about some bike Tour Operator.
I found this tour called “Three Lakes and more” ,in this way I can visit Lake Maggiore, Lake Como and Lake Iseo, I've only 6 / 7 days.
With my friends we can have a private tour.
I have to decide in a few days.

Hello I come from the Lago Maggiore area.
It’s actually a great area for cycling. Either to go round the lake on mostly flat routes or going uphill in the countryside like The climb of the Mottarone by the VIA DEI BORROMEO (a private road where cars need to pay), the Cannobina or the Centovalli. Feel free to ask me more about the area.

I would be interested in knowing more about the traffic in September. Is it relatively stress free riding or hectic and busy. Looks like a beautiful area. Looking at Google maps the roads appear rather narrow with limited bike lanes. I don't really worry about bike lanes if the traffic is reasonable. Anyway, any info you can provide is appreciated.

Well, it’s a touristic area until the end of September but as you lay back from the lakesides and go uphill there’s less people. Actually the situation improved in the last 10 years because roads have been enlarged but still there aren’t that many bike lanes and it’s still Italy with all it’s good but also with it’s bad sides (people will take their car instead of a 100 meters walk). That being said, secondary itineraries are often left aside and if you like hills, there’s quite a lot to do (even on the Lago d’Orta side, smaller but also very nice).
Feel free to email me and I’ll try to link you some images out of the book I have.
Best
Pietro

In case there’s a cycling route from the southern tip of the lake that goes to Milano
If you can google it (cannot post links until my 10th message )
It’s the Pista ciclabile sesto calende-Milano
