I am trying to decide where and how to do my tour, which will hopefully happen in August-September.

The current plan is to fly to Copenhagen and ride/sail to Rostock Germany. From Rostock, it would be a primarily southwest direction toward the Amsterdam area (south from there however far I get). I am excited about the route, but would hate to be fighting a head wind the entire way through Germany. Is there a prevailing wind direction in that area and time of year?

Your best chance of a tailwind is Amsterdam to Copenhagen.

In fact, near the coast in Ostfriesland (Niedersachsen or Lower Saxony) around Carolinensiel and west of there, the trees all lean distinctively to the east from steady westerly winds. You will see rows and rows of wind turbines there. However, I have spent time a few miles inland to the south and do not remember noticing a lot of wind. Still, wind turbines are to be seen through the whole area, and those are not profitable without a lot of wind.

Thanks much. I found a surf report website (I'll insert a link when I get home) that seemed to currently indicate about the same. I will do some more investigating but I am altering my thinking and may start in France or Belgium and work north and east now.

I really think you should go from west towards the east. That will give you a much more pleasant ride. But sounds nice. And you will also get to see two of the best biking cities in the world: Amsterdam and Copenhagen (I live in the latter), though I've heard that Portland, Oregon should be great to.

By the way. If you get to Copenhagen before the 7. of September and you like road racing, maybe you would like to participate in the race "csc Copenhagen cycling" which is split in 4 categories, from elite to family.

Ah, thank you for the info. I will likely take the west-east advice. The race sounds fun. We will see how it turns out.

I have been to Amsterdam, but not in a few years and never by bicycle. I wantt o see some of Belgium again too, So I might start there instead.
