Bike Rental in Rome

This isn't for hard core riders or tourers, but I'll in Rome for three days next week. If the weather cooperates (fingers are crossed) I was thinking of renting a bike to go to and through the Appia Antica. Via the internet, I've found at least two rental places near my hotel just north of the Colosseum, or bikes can be rented at the Appia Antica park. Seems it would almost be easier to ride the 5km down to Appia Antica than taking public transit. Renting for a full day is only a couple Euro more than for a couple of hours at the park, so money is not an issue.

So, to my questions if anybody is familiar with biking in Rome (this will be my first time in Rome but 5th trip to Italy):

1) Is it reasonable to ride the 5km in that area of Rome? Looks like a straight shot on a map but maps don't tell you what the streets or traffic is like.
2) I know that parts of the Appia Antica is 2000+ year old cobblestone. Any recommendations on the type of bike to rent? There seem to be options between 700c commuter style, 26" hybrids or front suspension mountain bikes.
3) Anything else you might be able to add?

Thanks in advance.

After having driven in Rome, I would NOT rent a bike! Traffic there was more like hand-to-hand combat.
That said, if I were to rent a bike to ride the Appia, it would be one with larger softer tires than a 700c and/or with suspension. The Appia can be rough as a cob in places and very uneven.
