Way to go. Have you considered a different kind of bike? I'm talking about a flatbar road bike. Many people I know prefer the more relaxed fit and increased stability. You can buy flatbar road bikes that are light and fast. You don't need to wear as much lycra as before but bike shorts (under gym shorts) is still a must. A simple bike shirt (or t-shirt) is also fine. Clipless, toe clips and platform pedals are all good - whatever you like. It's a bike that lets you go as fast or as far as you want without any pretentions.

Welcome back. I rode my first century when I was about your age.

Hi Arkansas. Good to be back.

I rode my first century when I was 21 or 22... and fit... and had a six-pack (prior to lots of different six-packs!). However, there have been many appreciable improvements since then:
  • Clipless pedals
  • Brifters / indexed shifters
  • Carbon bikes
  • HUGE aftermarket availability, and local bike shops actually have genuine Shimano and Campag spares rather than basic, cheap, no-name bits
  • Puncture-resistant tyres (kevlar etc)
  • Peel-off instant patches
  • Online ordering
  • Forums like this to encourage and inform
  • People like you to meet on these forums

Thank you and everyone else for the help and encouragement. I'm not yet a loud and proud MAMIL, but I didn't see anyone grinning or laughing as I rode past earlier tonight.
