Oh it happened all right. The four of us were all too stunned to think to take her picture.
It could happen again this July. The only way that you'll know for sure if it does is to come and ride along with us.

She is also concerned that the ride will be more urban than she likes.

The ride that I'm thinking of starts at the Madison County Parks HQ in Collinsville. Of the 32 (or so) mile loop that I generally ride, all but 5 or so are on paved bike paths. There are a BUNCH of interconnecting paths in the area so the ride length can be easily adjusted. While there are a few road crossings, I wouldn't call the ride urban at all.

Do you generally start the Katy ride from St. Peters?

St Charles riverfront. It's a perfect meeting/eating/shopping/ hanging our place.

I might be able to make the madison county trail ride. The Katy ride is too far and too long for me to attend now, since my mother has mobility problems ranging from leg cramps to being unable to get up from a chair, so I don't want to be away for more than a morning or an afternoon.
Recently, I've been doing the 10 mile loop of the "7 MCT Loops" on Saturday at 2:00, while mom has her hair done at Alverita's College of Cosmetology. The timing is just about perfect that way. I started by going Nickle Plate to Heritage to Goshen, but I think I like it better going the other way around, since that section of the Goshen Trail is the least interesting part of the ride.

Now I have to make a decision as July 9th is the same day as the infamous Tour de Donut up in Staunton, Illinois.
I should be at the MCT ride on the 10th.

We'll have better food in St Charles than those greasy old donuts.

I'm not promising that - but it could happen. If you don't participate you'll never know for sure because I, for one, will lie about it.
I'm thinking that it's good that none of us had the presence of mind to take her picture. There's no way her reality could possibly live up to the images we still have in our minds.

That's an interesting point. Mrs. Grouch is planning to ride along on the Social this year. Could be a coincidence - but I doubt it.

Ok, so finally after reading the 50+ ride and searching for the Katy threads, I found this one.
First the thread business: I won't be doing Katy this year, because I have been on a roller coaster. First I thought "I'm doing Shoreline MUP," then Mrs. Road Fan decided she needed loads of training for it, so then my statement was "I'm doing OHR." It was in this phase that I started my BF 50+ "WTF are we doing this year?" thread. Then with her extensive riding (she's retired, I'm not) she said "I think we should do Shoreline MUP." A few recent rides are showing me that I need to do my saddle training AND work on endurance. Now, we are planning for OHR and possibly RAT the following weekend.
Second, I agree with Retro about excessive thinking about representing the 50+ rides as being a part of whatever Internet Brands is and does, and that somehow what we have been calling it could maybe be misconstrued as implying a sanctioning or other BF/Internet Brands sanctioning of an event. We never said that we were operating officially under BF or IB, and we only used the term "Official" in clearly tongue in cheek contexts, mainly when DenvrFox was putting the first ride together and discussing the subsequent ones.
Third, discussion of "liability" is all very nice, but what do we really mean, and is there any way we the riders could benefit? When I coordinated the Third ride, I spoke to the Ann Arbor Bicycle Touring Society (AABTS) legal person, who said the AABTS only protects itself against possible lawsuits brought by riders ("my wheel broke, and AABTS chose the road so AABTS owes me a new wheel"). That is certainly a responsibility that I do not want to have if I lay out a ride course. But the AABTS offers nothing to the event participant other than a map, a sticker, and a lunch. We still need to watch out for ourselves and our fellow riders, and have our own medical insurances, and if we desire, have some kind of coverage for a damaged bicycle. But these sorts of protections are what any adult rider should have, anyway.
I hope this horse goes back into a deathlike slumber. There's really no need to awaken it.
