Bike-free in Venice

I'm off to Venice for four days later in the week for a short break.

No worries about looking for somewhere to go for a ride, just walking and boat rides.

Must be the least bike friendly city in the world, but it's great.

Venice is a great city. My wife and I spent a week there 11 years ago.
The food sucked, (surprisingly) but it was still a great adventure. Once you get out of the tourist trap zones, it's fun looking for hidden treasures, like courtyard gardens.
Be sure to visit Murano and Burano.

If you really need a cycling fix, you can take the Vaporetto out to The Lido and rent one. Wheeled vehicles are allowed there.

Funny. I thought the same thing when we visited a few years ago.

"Man ... all these bridges ... this would be hell on wheels on a bike."

It's a sickness, I tell ya.

How about one of the aquacycles John Howard was peddling (and pedaling) about 15 years ago?

It's not like you would have much control over that anyways.

I never cared a thing about Venice until I read "City of Falling Angels" by John Berendt. He made it as enticing as Savannah in "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" (I used to live in Savannah and Berendt really captured part of the city's charm). Berendt's stories skirt the boundaries of fact/fiction/faction, but he writes like Robert Altman's best movies, encompassing many stories, characters and places within a city. So now for some inexplicable reason I'd like to visit Venice.

We really enjoyed our stay in Venice. It's a very charming city if you allow it to be that way.

It's a marvellous place, and I've been there four times, but don't go in summer as it's very hot, overcrowded with cruise ships and daytrippers and the canals smell.

I stay on the island itself, rather than the Lido, as the nights and early mornings in the narrow side streets are so atmospheric.

I've been to Venice twice. The first time, I wasn't impressed. It was crowded, the canals stunk, and it appeared dirty. The second time was late Fall and I found it to be beautiful. We spent 3 days strolling around the city. If you get lost, you keep walking and pop out somewhere eventually that you know.

As for no wheels, they even frown on luggage castors there.

Getting lost is part of the charm. If you have not been lost in Venice, you have not really seen Venice.
