I'm not sure what they say to others, but I suppose the common theme would be that I prefer something a little off the beaten path -- individualist, but not all that much really. I like nice things, but not necessarily the latest and greatest. I prefer straightforward to gimmicky.

It says I'm old school (friction dt shifters, toe cages and straps) and refuse to modernize. I've ridden this way for 50 years and don't see the need to change.

My road bike thanks me for getting more active starting in 2014 and not just taking it for rides when we go to Wisconsin each year in mid-May for a mini-vacation. It is enjoying doing multiple centuries per year again.
My hybrid bike (inherited from my father) thanks me for adding studded tires, fenders, and bar mitts this year so that it is being ridden more than it ever has.
Both bikes say they would be faster if the rider would lose the excess pounds she keeps saying she will take off.

I have no idea what my collection says about me other than that I like steel frames and love to build what pleases me.
From top to bottom: early 1980s Carbolite Peugeot with disk brake and rhm-rebuilt ADGA leather seat.
1985 Peugeot Corbier, also Carbolite, completely remade with my preferred components.
Mid-70s Peugeot AO-8, also completely rebuilt with my preferred components.
1970s Nishiki Olympic built from a bare frame. The Crank is a Japanese version of the Cyclotouriste.
An early 70s Schwinn Speedster that has been converted to a 15 speed. I plan to replace the wimpy pressed fork with something much more substantial.
And . . . A Masi Gran Criterium
And finally, my 1980 Stevenson touring bike, modified with ten speed Campagnolo and a new, wider fork that can fit wider modern touring tires. The old fork is carefully stored away.
(Not shown are three Rodriguez customs, a 1981 Stevenson criterium bike with Campy SR, a 1987 Centurion Le Mans RS with full Campy NR, an old Raleigh Capri, a 1971 Gitane Tandem, an Astra, and a Motobecane Nomade.)

What does my bike say about me?
My bike stays out in the garage. When I'm around it's all nice and friendly. But I recently overheard the lawnmower talking with the string trimmer and the snow thrower about some crap the bike has been saying about me when I'm not around. "This ride was too long..." That ride had too many hills..." blah blah blah. They didn't know I was listening in...but it's safe to say the relationship is not in good shape right now.
