Some people have experienced muscular problems with statins, so I presume this is why the action from the Doctor. There are other cholesterol medicines available though, so I presume that he will be trying you on these. If not- it is a life of lettuce leaves, boiled chicken and oatmeal. Not a pretty thought, but Look at it this way. An increase in physical activity does help reduce cholesterol levels, so more time to spend in the saddle.
You haven't stated whether you have a cholesterol problem or if it is just a safety precaution, but take the advice from your doctor, and keep cycling.
(Another one that has to keep an eye on cholesterol)
