I did run all-out several times with my dog in Cannon Beach, Oregon. We both had a blast. No times were clocked. No cyclists were maimed

I'm 60 and the sad thing is I probably couldn't run 40 yards at high speed. For now I can hold my own on a bike with youngsters who are very fleet, but for some reason the muscles that let you sprint are gone.I'm curious what everyone else's thoughts on this matter are? I'd love to hear that some 60 year old guy can run a 6 or maybe 5.5 second 40? Maybe we should all try and post our times? Leave me out, one if my legs might fall off.

I’ve been running regularly a couple of times a week for the last six months. I’ve biked more recently now that it’s warmer.
In the last few weeks I’ve felt ok switching from just doing endurance pace runs to some 200 yard interval workouts. I think the biking has helped with that. I might try to count a 40 yard stretch the next time I do that, but a 40 yard time is not a goal of mine.

Fifteen years ago, I could say "Sure, I'm fat, but I could still run for my life if I had to." After I messed up my back? I won't even try...I'd just lay down and let the bear have me. I honestly can't even trot now.

I have never worried about short distance sprint speeds, and I have mostly endurance / slow-twitch muscles, anyway. I also try to avoid explosive exercise and hard pounding of the feet and legs at this age.

I have no idea but am curious. I am not even sure how to measure given I have no stopwatch.
I play ice hockey in the so-called Beer Leagues and my 65 yo carcass can sprint with 30 year olds if they are a bit fat but I did an up and back (one end of the ice rink to the other and back) against two D1 College hockey players and was surprised how much quicker off the line that they were. One said to do 40 yard sprints and use the heavy squat rack. I said, maybe in the next life. I would have been pretty much shoulder to should with them 45 years ago. At least I did not pop a nut.
