Only soft tissue damage

Now it's 10 weeks off the bike and I just got my arm out of the sling. I looked at my bike for the first time today and I clearly took one for the team. I'm spending another 8ish weeks with the arts 😉

It freaks me out when I see an X-ray showing a body part in a state it’s not supposed to be in. I split the end of my clavicle in 2012. The image showed part of the bone sticking up.

Of most all the other typical broken bones one gets, I don't want it to be my clavicle. So I wish you the best for your recovery. And that it doesn't impact your comfort when you do get back on.

I've always heard that one should never put their arms out to catch a fall. Otherwise the risk is a broken clavicle. Is there anything to that? So far in all my mishaps, I've kept my hands on the bars till all the damage has been done. But the one thing I think that would get me is if something threw me over the bars. Then how can one not put their arms out?

But again, wish you the best recovery. Enjoy the art.

Clavicle wasn't broken, all the ligaments were torn. I got flipped over the left side so fast I didn't let go...or hold on.

That's why I'm not a X-ray technichian.

That sort of brings up the question... which is better? A broken clavicle or having all the ligaments torn as yours is. I'd almost think a bone fracture will heal quicker. However certainly I have no clue either way. Do you know or did they make any reference to such?

Oh man... I broke my shoulder about 15 years ago and it was pretty darn painful and I couldn't even see where the break was on my x-ray. I hope you heal well and quickly.

A broken bone is typically going to heal faster than soft tissue tears, I'm being patient while the ligament grafts knit because...I have no effing choice.

From this to that; The very serious eastern European anesthesiologist wrapped up her pre-surgery talk with this gem, in her Count Dracula accent; "The healing of all serious trauma will include pain." Oh that was so fking awesome!

May your blessings include healing as much as is possible, with a minimum of pain.

I don't sweat broken collarbones. (No, I do not like them but if that's all that comes from a hard crash (besides road rash), I feel I did well.) I do get them X-rayed initially and the routine follow visit two weeks later to ensure that it's going to set without issues. (And yes, my shoulder will move inboard typically a 1/4 " to 1/2". After four, two each side, I finally arrived at symmetrical - well close enough - again.

Edit: To the topic - soft tissue injuries. Yes! I would far rather do a collarbone than soft tissue shoulder. BTDT. Collarbones mean I am now deformed but operate pretty close to a 72 yo version of spec. A soft tissue injury 25 years ago means to this day, only muscle keeps my left arm in the socket. And that injury hurt! So bad my PT with gifted hands was the only person who could touch it without extreme pain.

I have a clavicle that looks sort of like that. It did break, distally, and never reunited.

You bet! I have matching broken collarbones, and I would much rather that than soft tissue damage.

I think I have shared this before, but it makes the case that our clavicles have evolved to be something that breaks rather than doing damage to other structures. When it breaks, it has done it's job.

Is that classified as a shoulder separation? What grade is it?

As I'm sitting here recovering from a total knee replacement, I feel your pain. I hope it won't be long before you are back in the saddle. Best wishes on your recovery, boomer

AC separation type V, which made the surgical resident excited and got him kudos from the other residents at the lunch table...where my wife was also having lunch with her gang of old rheumatologists.

I rode Zwift today with my left hand on the bars for the first time. I'm doing sorts of very cool range-of-motion PT and on Tuesday my therapist pointed out their VO2 measuring system, ooooooooo. Also told me there's no way in hell Medicare is going to cover a VO2 max test.

Looks familiar, did the same thing back in 2018. Mine was not as bad though so I opted for no surgery. Took forever to be mostly right again.

I hope the recovery goes well for you and you get back up to full speed quickly!

I broke both of my clavicles at different times, and didn't get my hands out for either one. It's just how you land on it. The last time (7 or 8 years ago) was just a slight fracture with no displacement, but I also tore the AC that day, so that still sucks, even years later some days (and that's my good shoulder now). When the x-ray tech was getting his shots, he came around the camera and got right in front of me and asked if my left shoulder didn't also feel like something was broken...I said, "oh, broke that one in '94"...apparently it didn't heal very well just using an x-brace and no PT. Might be why I have arthritis, bone spur, impingement and nerve issues in that shoulder lately, too.

a surgeon once told me, that's not "pain" that's "discomfort". ppl are sometimes wrapped up in "pain management" & wind up w/ side effects. my own experience has been that sometimes it's better to endure some discomfort, than take meds which offer minimal pain reduction
