Okay, you guys talked me into getting some MTB shoes, so I just brought home a pair of Shimanos. Nothing particularly fancy or expensive, the SH-MT30's, on sale for about $70. No clips but they have the option later.

They'd better deliver a significant performance boost or I'm holding you all accountable. That's all I'll say.



PS: Almost walked out with a Trek 1500 WSD for my 14 year old daughter! She came to the store with me and came *this close* to talking me into it, until I realized *I* don't even have a new bike!

I bought some new bike shoes, first time ever, to wear actual biking shoes, lol. I purchased the Specialized Taho since they fit very well, size 14. Got a new set of Candy C pedals also. Trying to develop the confidence to keep them on going uphill on the rough trails, but I am also riding my 20+ year old Specialized bike. My friends say trail riding will get easier as soon as I can build up my fs bike. It hard to anticipate time to remove cleats from pedals when attempting harder sections of trails, lol.

Can assure you Gary that the new shoes will be better for cycling and will be comfortable once they are worn in. Only problem is that they look like a trainer so expect to be turned away from the disco tonight.

You must be hard- Offroad with Rigid forks- that makes you hard- Hard enough not to worry about falling over, and if your that hard- who's going to laugh.

Anticipation does not come into it offroad with the cleats. Only time to unclip is when you are lying on the ground with the Hawthorns up your arms and the Mud down your neck. As I Said- Anticipation does not come into it- It happens too fast.

Be quite honest- I found that susspension forks slowed me down- I was far more agile with a bike that weighed 3lbs less- only problem was that the body eventually gave out and I had to succumb to being a softie.

Gary, the shoes will make a difference. If nothing else your cool factor just went up 10 points to all those bike fashion snobs out there. I remember my first "cycling shoes". They were Bell Bikers. These were canvas shoes with a rubber sole and a steel shaft running down the center.... no provisions for cleats, but even they were better than "non-cycling" shoes.

PS: NOS88 -- you've reminded me I have a Very Old Pair of cycling shoes around here somewhere from twenty years ago. They look like bowling shoes, only not as attractive. I'll have to dig those up and take a picture! I wore them once into an LBS a few months ago and even the clerks there couldn't help bursting into laughter.

I'm going to break in the new shoes today. With my luck, I'll find a fantastic bike on Craigslist next week with clipless pedals.

This made me remember my first pair of cycling shoes. Who remembers the black perforated leather uppers with the wooden soles? You would ride them for a while to get the impression of the pedals on the wood and then nail the cleats on? I still have them somewhere but will have to do an archeaological dig to find them.

I never was much good at following directions!

But, I can report that, having put 20 wonderful bike miles on new shoes today, my average speed increased 5.2 mph from all that new-found power. I went from 16 mph average on my new (used) bike to 21.2 mph over the course of the ride.

Oh, and btw, I lie like a rug.

But the shoes do feel pretty good!

The shoes are black. The bike is black. The helmet is black. My shorts are black, okay one is navy blue and one is green, but the favorites are black. These aren't bike shorts, they're "street shorts."

OK, Gary. It's your fault. At least that's what I'm telling my wife when she finds out. All this talk about new shoes got me thinking that I should get a new pair. After all, I'e been riding around with one lose cleat because one of the anchor bolts is stripped.... So, I got me a pair of Cat 1 carbon sole shoes today and took them out for a short test ride. My, oh, my.... they are stiff. I can't even feel the force of the pedal under them. Like I said, I'm blaming you, Gray.
