My black Trek OCR is called Vlad the Impaler because I have been known to fall off when I have a seniors' moment and attempt to put the wrong foot down and end up on my side looking ridiculous. My wife rides a Gitane called "Gertie" - what else.

As I've collected bikes I started naming them so that I could remember them. My first and primary ride is My Bike. I also acquired My Other Bike, and then The Other Bike. Most recently I added Which Bike, and for the heck of it, Your Bike. Conversations about them tend to be interesting.
Wife: "Have a nice ride, honey. Are you riding your bike?" Me: "No. I'm riding My Bike." Wife, slightly confused: "That's what I said, your bike." Me: "No, not Your Bike, My Bike." Wife, now really confused: "I really didn't expect you to ride my bike. What's wrong with your bike?" Me: "Nothing's wrong with Your Bike, I just don't feel like riding it today. But if you didn't didn't expect me to ride My Bike, what bike did you expect me to ride?" Wife, passing from confused to whatever it is that wives go through before they really get ticked off: "Not what bike, which bike. Which bike are you going to ride?" Me: "No, not Which Bike, My Bike. I'm riding My Bike." Wife, now really ticked off: "Look d*mmit, I don't care which bike you ride! You've got a whole d*mned garage full of bikes and you don't know what d*mn bike you're going to ride?" Me: "I don't have a D*mn Bike." Well, that's not entirely true, since I'm living out here in the garage now I have acquired two new roommates. I'm thinking of calling them What Bike, and D*amn Bike. John in Oregon |

I'm starting to get into this naming thing. I named another one of my bikes this weekend It's For Sale. I thought I'd take it out for a quick ride this morning (before I actually sell it) when my neighbor saw me and said, "Nice bike." I said, "Thank you. It's For Sale." Neighbor, starting to look confused: "Er, uh, thanks. I'll keep that in mind." Me: "Well, you certainly can't do better than a vintage steel, British, lightweight bicycle. It's For Sale is a..." Neighbor, now moving from confused to slightly annoyed: " Er, uh, yes. You've mentioned that." Me: "...worth...mentioned what?" Neighbor, now beginning to look trapped with eyes darting side to side as if to escape: "That it's for sale. If I ever have the desire to own a bicycle, you'll certainly be the first person I'll call." Neighbor: running back to his garage, "Have a nice bike...uh, day! Have a nice daaayyy!" he yelled back over his shoulder. Me: "No, this one isn't Nice Day, It's For Sale! I don't have a Nice Day ye..." Neighbor: "AAAaarrrrgghhhh!" Now that he mentioned it, I wonder if he wants to buy a bike. I got one named It's Not For Sale, about his size that I suppose I could part with. I think I'll go ask. John in Oregon |
For some reason, I keep referring to mine as "Glenda"!
I have no idea why that is. ;) |
Lets see... the Motobecane is "Mr. Moto", the Bisnchi is "B", my new LHT has aquired the name "Jerry", since I was listenening to Grateful Dead's American Beauty CD while building it up. The Cannondale hasn't gotten a name yet, but will I'm sure. .

i actually named one of my bikes "Ave Maria" in honor of a character in the novel "Big Stone Gap.". I wrote to the author telling her, and she was really pleased.
