Where have all these 50+'rs gone?

Where did they all go?

OK - here is a list of all the folks who have posted to the thread (and the number of posts) I started 08-25-04, 12:44 PM Special Thread For 50+yo Bicyclists

So, each of these folks took enough time to answer and post 7 questions about their bicycling as a 50+'r, but very few post any more.

What do you suppose happened to them? Why did they stop posting? Or, perhaps more importantly, why are we still here?

[QUOTE=DnvrFox]Where did they all go?

Some of us are on your list but haven't gone anywhere and haven't stopped posting. I particularly enjoy the 50+ board because it's more fun. The over 50 posters don't seem to take themselves as seriously as the people on the road bike board for example.

I guess I didn't make myself clear.

These are all the folks who have posted, not those who have gone away. Therefore, you will find my name and other current posters. But you will also find about 75% no longer posting here. Them's is who I am asking about.

It's not something I give much thought to. I enjoy the people who do post, I miss one or two who have dropped out, and have no sense of connection or concern with the others. Perhaps it didn't meet their needs in some way. Perhaps they're shy. Perhaps they started riding and quit. Who knows?

Some post to get advise. (I did that) This line will diminish as we know more and think we have the answers.
Some post to be helpful. That will diminish if the poster gets insulted or no thank you.
Some use this and other forums as a form of fellowship. That applies to some folks but not very many IMHO.

I would like to do a survey of folks who have left the forum, never to post again! But that seems likely to be impossible.

Did you leave the forum because:

1. You gave up bicycling?

2. You did not like the interaction?

3. You were insulted?

4. You had all your questions answered?

5. You moved on to another forum?

6. I am here but I just lurk?

etc., etc.

I know all of this is mostly just sort of wasting my time as I sit at home recovering from the last leg of our trip home (60-70 mile per hour winds blasting sand at the car) but I am just curious!

Let me double my posts. I thought I might still ride thru the winter months here in east, but after Feb 1st, things got too cold and too windy for me. No riding no forum. Weather has finally warmed up, but alas I seem to have lost motivation to get out and ride. The couple of rides I did get in, I seem to also have lost my stamina, which unfortunately feeds my excuses for not riding. Anyway I'm back lurking the forum, trying to get some motivation, I particullarly want to try out the Trek 1000 road bike I picked up this winter from ebay. Just hope those skinnie tyres don't pop from my weight. ;)

I know that I no longer participate in the "chat" on BikeJournal.com because it has been dominated the last couple of months by a couple of folks who simply use it as their own chat session about most everything BUT bicycling, generally ignoring others and forming their own cliques. Yet, this is not something I would necessarily share there. Instead, I just drop out.

Denver; I know that this is not what you asked. But... Simply put: Life & its' pulls: Taxes the past few weeks. Cleaning the yard, power spray & staining the deck. Fixing up a rental unit. Oh, yes, there is work, the wife & 3 kids. Church. Kids to & from sports. The cars to maintain, fire wood to split for next winter, lawn to seed. Finish a bike for a son. Easter with relitives. An occasional dinner with the wife. Somewhere in the spare time I hope to ride a bit & post. Sooner or later, I'll get the info to you on the bio. Hope you understand.

Ditto on the fine folks here on the over 50 forum. Sometimes it is easier to read & enjoy & not post.

Bob

Did you leave the forum because:

1. You gave up bicycling? Nope. Just got my Eddy tuned and took it for a hilly TN 60+ miler Saturday. Followed ny a 18+ high spin today.

2. You did not like the interaction? Nope. Nothing has piqued my interest except for the troubling problems you had in the past.

3. You were insulted? Nope. I'm too dumb to be insulted.

4. You had all your questions answered? HA! Can a 220 lb old guy who has been lazy for the past three months ride UP Haleakala in under 5 hours in June? What kind of training besides just putting time in the saddle do I need to be doing? I do not ride at altitude much above 1000 ft.

5. You moved on to another forum? There's another forum? Actually, my wife and I ride a tandem and I lurk there also.

6. I am here but I just lurk? Yep. That and ride. I try to make sense out of what you all do and fit it into my life. I'm not much of an advice giver due to the expertise that's on this forum. I find that most of my learning comes from trying something and screwing it up. You all have saved me wear and tear a few times in the past year.

Regards to you all who are inclined to help us uninformed old guys,

Denver, there must be something wrong with the tool you are using to count posts. I have posted in this forum at least a dozen times this month alone but your count shows a total of 1 post since I joined. What gives? I'm still here; still posting; still riding; and still enjoying the forum, the threads, the posts and the riding!

That's probably the number of posts you made to the one thread that Dnvr was analyzing. Not all your posts. Just the one where people answered a few questions about themselves.

Good point DG but he also said, "What do you suppose happened to them? Why did they stop posting? Or, perhaps more importantly, why are we still here?" That implies that those listed don't post any more. By the way I lived in San Diego off and on for three years 75-78 (Navy fighter squadron, VF-111, intelligence officer) when not deployed on aircraft carriers. Man I LOVED San Diego. Lived over by UCSD most of the time. I have visited several times since then, last about six years ago. Boy its a lot more crowded now. I would love to relive those days (well at least a few of them). Have a good evening!!

Drop by anytime. It's a bit more crowded, and houses are astronomical in price now, but the cycling is still good! They can't take that away!

Oddly enough, my life has come full circle; following my div.. div... after my marriage ended I moved back to University Heights, only a few blocks from my first apartment, wanting to get back into an urban setting and out of the boring East County suburbs. It gives me an odd feeling when I pedal past it these days. The old apartment building is still there.

Bikeforums is a big place. I don't lurk here very often. More likely you'd find me and guys like BlazingPedals and bentrox over on the recumbent board. There's supposed to be over 30,000 members. I know by looking at the members lists that most people stop dropping in the first 6 months or so after they join, so I don't think it's anything against Bikeforums, I just think the internet is a big place and they've gone to the other dimension.

I'm still here, lurking mostly as I always have. I still have my bikes, but not always the time to use them. I guess I still have too many interests. I haven't been insulted in any way. If I see a thread I feel I can contribute to, I do. Like this one

(I thought this was going to be a dead-end thread. But, it has been fascinating!)
